help, wont come out of park unless..

93 wagon will not come out of park if I start it normal, yet I can put the key to accessory put it in nuetral and start it, now do we think the problem is in the steering column or the shift handle assembly? why wont it come out of park if its started and running but I can get it out of park if I just click the key once but not start it? very frustrating, any hints?

I would guess it's your ignition switch. The reason I say this is that I beleive the only reason you cannot shift out of park is that there is a solnoid that dissables you to do so. and the only combination that will enable this solnoid is brakes(on newer cars) and ignition on at the same time. If your ignition switch, for whatever reason, is not enabeling your solnoid when it's in your "start" position it would probably do this. This is just my thought.

well you could be right, we did have that ignition replaced several years ago, I also called the dealer the mechanic said it is probably the brake swich under the brake pedal, same idea as what you said, it gets by passed if its in accessory,he said we probably dont have rear lights at this point, but if its not that then we will try the ignition swich , hopefully its not too hard of a fix.

well turns out it was a fuse that kept the car from coming out of park, go figure.
easy fix,thank goodness.
