Which Tacoma would YOU choose from?

I found two Tacomas I like in my area (Sacramento, CA). The two factors bugging me are the mileage and price:

2001 Tacoma PreRunner Regular Cab
95,000 Miles
$10,988

OR

2002 Tacoma PreRunner Regular Cab
29,000 Miles
$13,599

If I got the second one, I'd need to get a $6,000 loan ($9,000 down), and it would take 6 months to pay it off, so that's the only thing bugging me. Tacomas are known for reliability, but even at 95k miles?

Thanks

Option 1. My cousin has a 00+ tacoma and i believe its over 100k miles cause he works as a Landscaper/gardener and he goes around roseville, folsom, sac every single day.

Re: Which Tacoma would YOU choose from?

Look at the economics, truck 2 has 66,000 less miles and costs $2600 more. When truck 1 passes 100k the value will fall. Even touugh Toyotas have a good reliability rating they do have things wear out that will need replacing. Have either of these trucks seen lots of off road use? Are maintenance records available for either truck? I assume they are both dealer trucks, will they provide you a Carfax vehicle history report. You want that to rule out collision or flood damage and any salvage title history. Are the tires almost new on both vehicles?
Can the mileage be verified by someting other than the odometer? Both trucks are regular cabs, not many people are buying regular cab trucks, even though you may like them when it comes time to resell it is difficult to sell a regular cab truck, consequently they bring lower prices. If it were me, I would forget truck one and try to negotiate a lower price for truck 2 if it passes the history and mileage reports. Offer around $10,500 and see what happens. If they say say no, give them your phone number, go home and wait. They will probably call in a day or 2 wanting you to go higher, don't give in very easily, it's January and people aren't knocking their doors down trying to buy trucks. You can always go up on your offer if you feel it's a good value. With the down payment you have I would think you should be able to get a good bank loan and a six months pay back isn't long. Many people have 5 year payments so you are in the driver's seat. Just my opinion.

Re: Which Tacoma would YOU choose from?

my 96 has 117000 + miles on it and i just had the truck checked out my a mechanic, the only thing im going to have to replace are the heater hoses, they are starting to crack. I would check the timing belt on the first one. I cant remember the exact mileage mine was changed at but i think it was like 97,000

V6 or 4 cyl.

Miles are miles.

If they are both V6's I would choose the 29,000 mile truck version #2.

My 3.4L V6 needed $4,400 in repairs at 187,000 miles for a burned ex. valve and two cracked heads. It was never abused and I had always had the services done by the dealer whenever the maint. sced. said to do so.
I commented to the dealer that I expected to get at least 300,000 miles on the truck before pulling the motor apart, He replied that the 4 cyl's will go that far but the V6's tend to burn exhaust valves at higher mileages. They did not tell me that before I popped the extra money for the V6, not to mention the more expensive services it requires.

Good Luck.

Re: Which Tacoma would YOU choose from?

Go for 2 but don't forget that those pre runners aren't sought after as much as the double cabs. Whats the color of the 2 just out of curiosity because if your not happy with the color you will never be happy driving the vehicle. Just my 2 cents.

They were both Silver Streak Mica colored. #1 has been sold, so I'm going to wait just a little longer, see is anything cheaper will come along, but with low miles of course. I really like black colored Tacomas, but I'm not sure if I'd be able to handle the extra maintenance and care needed for black colored vehicles. I like the Desert Sand Mica color also.

The reason I'm waiting a tad longer is because choice #2 has miscellaneous features that are nice, but I would hardly use them, like cruise control. And I can do without the fancy chrome grilles/bumpers, they just add on to the price. I just love the look of Prerunner Tacoma Regular Cabs that's all WITH FENDER FLARES!!!!
