1986 Subaru XT 4x4 Turbo 1.8L - 4X4 Just went out!!!
I took my car out of 4x4 today while on a clear street, and when I needed to use it for the snow, it wouldnt engage again. When I press the 4x4 button on the shifter, I hear something clicking underneath like it wants to go into 4x4, but the light doesnt come on and the back wheels dont turn. I just replaced the starter cause it went out on me today, and now this! Also, the light on the dashboard that tells you if the car is riding hi or low is bouncing up and down, and my "Height" button doesnt work any more.
If it matters, I got it stuck in the snow yesterday. It was bottomed out from all of the snow, and I tried to get it out in 4x4 mode, but it wouldnt go, so I had to dig it out with a metal coal shovel. Maybe I hit a wire or something??? I hadn't taken it out of 4 wheel drive since then, then the second I try to put it back in, it wont engage... and my car is bouncing up and down, according to the display... HELP!!!! Thanks. |

Re: 1986 Subaru XT 4x4 Turbo 1.8L - 4X4 Just went out!!!
sounds like you may have knocked loose a vacum line when you did the starer. notice the pair of vac lines coming of the diaphragm off the side of the tranny. follow them up to these green solenoids, that is what controls the 4wd on off. check to see if these modules are clicking. check all the vacuum lines around them and make sure none were pulled off, or any of the fittings are broken
you can reverse the lines on the solenoid so the 4wd off will turn it on, vice versa. but you would have to do this ach time to turn it on or off, until you get the real problem fixed. dont worry its not the tranny, these solenoids you can find on ANY 85-94 pushbutton 4wd 5spd subaru suppose you cant find a part something vaccum actuated could be rigged if need be, or manually manipulate the 4wd diaphragm anyway you still have 4wd just its control is out
