Here's another new (not rookie) guy

Hey everyone !
My name is Jim Mullis and I've been reading the forum here for a couple weeks and decided to sign up. I live near Memphis, TN, but not from here. I am a 50 year old guy that thinks he is still a kid. I have built many models, but it's been years. I've had 1:1 scale cars for a long time and kinda gotten outta that recently. I still have a load of old cars/parts and some 19 cent bottle paints I've saved, well since it was 19 cents.
Sorry to ramble, but I think there's a lot to gain for me with all the knowledge of everyone here.

My main questions are about "resin" body models. I have one now to do and need to know what to do before painting it. It's a Competion Resin body. Also, I have a Fiat body from the original AMT "Double Dragster" kit. That body was brush painted oh, 30some years ago. I've tried all the suggestions to "peel" the paint. It's in Simple Green soaking now.
Any suggestions, are appreciated.

Welcome to AF! castrol super clean will take the paint off if that body for you as far as the resin body if its not twisted or anything then just prime it color it and clear it.

For resin bodies the most vital thing is to get them clean before painting. This is to remove any mold-release agent that may still be on the body. Stick it in warm soapy water for about 15 minutes, and give it a good brush with an old toothbrush to get in all the nooks and cranies. Then rinse, and I blow dry using air out of my compressor. I aim to get the first coat of primer on straight away to avoid the body picking up too much grease and dust, for some reason resin seems to attract it even more than plastic! After the first primer coat, just paint it like plastic. Hope that helps some... and welcome on board.

Thanks for the responses on my questions. See, I told you I'd learn something! The body "looks clean" but, I'll try that before painting. (Just didn't want to mess up a high $$ resin body). As for the chemicals, got lotsa car cleaning stuff......

Hi Jim, welcome to these parts.
I agree with what Lotus_Man wrote, but would start with a wash in bleach to really make sure the mold release agents are removed. After that "key" the surface with some 800 or so sandpaper and prime away.
Good luck with your models, I hope you can show us some of them when you're done.

Welcome Jim, I still pretty new to these boards too.
I take a lazy approach to prepping resin, I spray it with EasyOff ovencleaner, wait about 10 minutes, and rince under warm water using a tooth brush. I then give it a final wash with hand soap, like Ivory. Blow dry with air pressure, but let stand for about 1/2 an hour before priming with a good sandable primer(plastic-coat sandable gray is good).
You can use any paint on resin, from enamel to lacquer. As someone said resin does seem to come with it's own static, something from the casting process. I've painted close to a hundred resin kits, and to date have had only one fisheye, so the above seems to work.

Hey thanks for the info Randy. I have some Easy-Off and I like the "less work" way, too.
I have built many models but none if a few years.
Had those street rods ya know?
I like to build the fuel burning dragster types. Once that nitro is in the blood, it's hard to shake.
Working on a '70's Mike Sullivan fuel altered right now.
