I have a 98 with a 4.3 liter. I have to install a distributor and havent a clue how to get number one TDC. On this vehicle, it has no adjustment due to powertrain control. There are 2 marks on the crank pulley, but cannot find any info on whether either of the 2 mean #1TDC. Can anyone help?

Re: 4.3 liter 1998 timing problem
Just pull the old one remember postion of rotor, don't turn the motor, put new in, then set timing.

Re: 4.3 liter 1998 timing problem
pull the #1 plug and put your thumb in the hole and turn the crank until it blows. It should be close to one of the marks on the crank. Line up the marks. Then you need a scantool to check your cam retard. But the mark will get u runnin.

As long as you don't turn the motor while you change the distributor you don't have to worry about #1TDC (Top Dead Center). Just mark the position of the old distributor and rotor. Then align the new ones with the marks. |

Re: 4.3 liter 1998 timing problem
remove the old.
Mark where the rotor was positioned exactly Then install the new. Easy.

Re: 4.3 liter 1998 timing problem
guys, thanks for the input. Except for the one where pulling the plug and checking for compression, I am too late to mark the rotor on the distributor. I have already removed old distributor and turned over engine. Marks on distributor will not work at this point, unfortunately. I will try the number one spark plug removal trick and hope for the best. Any other advise would be greatly appreciated
