HP guess
I wanted to get a couple of different opinions (guesses) as to how much hp to expect out of my engine, vortec 350 with 114K and 265hp now, with the addition of a comp cams k-kit, edelbrock performer intake, Hypertech PPIII, comp cams rocker arms and push rods. given just that a mechanic i know said i should get upwards of 350hp easy. also at a later point i may get an air intake kit, headers and complete new exhaust, and a bigger throttle body. Any estimate you can give would be great cuz i dont wanna pay big $$ for stuff and only end up with 300hp.

Re: HP guess
well if your just gettin the cam really it might open up your intake and exaust ext. and dur. a bit but w/ out the larger headers and exaust and a decent intake it dosent really perform to its potental now granted u will get a great change but untill u open up all the aspects of air in and air out u wont be able to really shine w/ all its potential...think bout it like this ok u r an athelete and u do all kinds of conditioning to breath better during a match of some sort, then before the match they give u a straw and tell u u have to breath through that the whole time. yeah ur gonna do better than u would b4 your conditioning but no where near as good as if they actually let u just breath w/ out that big restriction if that makes any since. i know its a corny way of looking at it and there is more too it than that but its true..a cam will let u take more air in and out but if u have restrictions at the entrance (intake) and exit (exaust) its still gonna be hard to do

Re: HP guess
i have a plenty free exhaust, true dual flows and i now have cut-outs so there is nothing restrictive about my exhaust. Also i plan to buy shorty headers as well as high flo cats and new 2.5" pipe at some later point. as for the intake its stock, basically, i will occasionally take the top of the box or take the filter out and put a less restrictive mesh filter in its place. But i know what you mean anyway, all i want is a number for hp. cuz if i get all this stuff costing around $2000 and only end up with a lil over 300hp im not gonna he a happy camper.

Re: HP guess
oh shit dude i didnt even read your post right for some odd reason i thought all u were getting was the cam kit and power programmer i didnt even see the intake on there im not an expert but i would say especially after the headers u should be upwards of 350 pretty easy but it could be more if u work on getting it programed real well w/ red light and mapping out fuel, and timing and stuff like that i still coulda swore though that the vortec intakes were expensive so id still call summit and make sure thats the one for your vehicle...o yeah and one more thing i thought the k kit came w/ push rods i know they come w/ the lifters but i thought it included the rods too

Re: HP guess
oh and the vortec heads already have pretty good flow compared to other stock heads so 89iroc says and i belive him cause everything hes told me he knows what hes talkin about so i could just imagine what they would flow if they had a good port job on them

Re: HP guess
yeh i know what ur sayin. i found a fuel pressure regulator and a bigger throttle body. but im havin problems finding the right injectors, guess they dont have to be made for a truck engine just as long as they fit and work right.

but over 350HP is worth it for the cost of the cam kit, which btw is a cam, lifters, springs, retainers, valve locks, stem seals, and timing chain set; intake manifold and programmer. but while puttin in the cam kit and intake would it be a good idea to wait until i also have the rockers, rods, and valves? and are valves even worth it? when i picked out valves there were two different sizes, whats the difference?, i picked the smaller ones. prolly wont get the exhaust and air intake right away, that will come later but i think i'll get by fine w/o for awhile.
Interestingly enuf, i work for a plumbing company and one of our upcoming jobs schedualed for early spring is for a diesel mechanic plumbing some lines on a new dyno-meter, so if i work the angle i mite could get a few test runs.

Re: HP guess
Why do you want all that horse power in a old truck ? Just get one of the new ones with like 410 HP and then trick that out. If you get a diesel , You can get one of those Six-gun paks from bulley dog and that can really unload some power to the wheels , seen that one on trucks and I was friggin surprised at the amount of Hp it adds and unlocks. while remaining street and emission legal , with a 6 stage kit. 1 stock - 2 stage 2 , yadda yadda so forth. It would be more reliable for the power than a gasoline truck would be as well. By the time your dumping all that money into your 97' , you cuold have traded it in and gotten a newer truck with the money you would have spent on mods for the 97 and come out on top with a new truck and more HP than if you had invested into your 97. Just a thought.

Re: HP guess
All it says is a high energy cam and the rpm range is 1500-5500. costs of what i wanna do to my truck, under $3000. cost of new truck, over $30000. not gettin a new truck for a long long time.

Re: HP guess
thats what i was sayin u really need to call comp cams and have them give u all the numbers and the part number for the kit if u dont know alot about them i wouldnt just be guessin which cam to get just by the rpm range of it first call summit 18002303030 then they can give you the number to comp cams thats what i did, and as for the valves u may not need new ones this is gonna be hard to explain but i read that the valve kinda receeds down at an anle then at the end of that angle i kinda just cuts straight down if that makes any since and if u still have that little area left that just cuts straight down and its not to worn they should be okay never worked on them myself this is just comming out of a chevy magizine so i leave that up to u

Re: HP guess
well goin by the rpm range listed i could only get 3 of them cuz i never see above 6000rpm. but yeh i was told by a friend that gettin new valves really wouldnt add any power at all. i dunno if you know Slowprocess or not but he has a newer silvy that runs 12's on all motor and he said gettin the heads ported and polished may add 30-40hp and i described what all i wanted to do and he said it should get me around 350-400hp total. still wondering if the rocker arms and push rods are worth $235.

Re: HP guess
Yeh im gonna contact someone from comp cams about a more specific kit info and also what kind of inktake would go well with it. and a set of roller rockers is what im thinkin about as far as that goes but i dunno how much it would be worth it. the way i look at it is if the rocker arms and push rods dont get me around 25-30hp its not worth it.
