You can swap in a WRX motor but it would require changing the front cross member or at least modding it.

Would awd be faster than fwd in the quarter mile I know it would be faster 0-60 but after that would it just take extra power that isn't needed once you are already moving.

Yes awd will be faster, since you don't lose power through wheel slippage at the line.
No, it doesn't take extra power that isn't needed once you're moving....it loses some power through drive train losses but the utilised power is greater too.

Re: 93-96 impreza questions help

Well, simple physics dictates that reducing rotating mass is more effective than reducing static weight. I've heard anything from being worth twice as much to ten times as much, but whatever the true ratio, it's better. When you are looking at wheels and tires, definitely look at the weight (If you can find it) and get the lightest ones you can find. I don't know what else there is available for these cars (R/C cars are so much more simple) but lighter components in the engine and drivetrain will also help. Just don't sacrifice durability for weight.

If you are considering body mods, aftermarket pieces may actually be heavier than the stockers, especially if it's a complex design.

I've been looking into Imprezas myself, and as far as I can tell, they are pretty much the same from the mid 90's up through the 2002 'bug eye' version.

An Impreza owner I grilled one night told me you can get 160+ hp out of the 2.2L engine with a few mods like headers, exhaust, and pulleys. I don't know much about engines, but that's pretty sweet it all that's true.
