Motor swap

I have researched this, and I came up with doing a swap from a v-6 to a v-8 could be cheaper then actually selling the six and spending more money, about as much as doing a swap as the swap could possiable be only 3000 dollers, to buy a z or an ss. This is a very argumental subject, so in your guys views since only needing the motor and the tranny and lift pull drop push drop is what it takes for a swap in a fourth gen, how easy is it going to be and weither it could cause an insurance issue?

Re: Motor swap

Cost depends on motor. If you are thinking LS1, they are expensive. Looking to sell mine off for a decent amount. $2K+, and that is a low figure.

The motor comes out from the bottom.

Insurance can continue to think the car is a V6.

Re: Motor swap

I've thought about this myself, and my dad said that if I changed it out to a V8, and I wrecked, I'd be screwed over by the insurance company. I figure he was just saying that so I won't put a V8 in my car.

Re: Motor swap

Insurance companies don't really care what you have under the hood as long as you pass emissions and is all 'legal'. Mine registeres as a 305 but I put a 350 in it and geico didn't give a rats ass. didn't go up a cent and they said it won't effect my coverage in any way. Maybe that's just geico..

Probably because it's still a V-8.

I have talked to a few people apound this question, I have found out it dont matter what you have as long as the vin says v-6 you will pay a v-6 and if you wreck your car, your value will equal that of a v-6. So all in all its a good deal, But again to get the motor and trans combo it could cost a good 2500 dollers, and about 500-1000 for the parts needed,
Ls1 motor and trans
Ls1 pcm and wireing harness
ls1 k-member and motor mounts
ls1 radiator
ls1 coolent and heater hoses
ls1 steering rack and linkage
ls1 throttal cable
custom fuel setup (or a 97 corvett fuel rails)

Re: Motor swap

Your best bet would be to look around local junk yards and Ebay to get these items for as cheap as you possibly can if money is the issue. Like motor mounts , throttle cable , dumb crap like that which won't matter if it was used or not.

Re: Motor swap

your biggest problem will be passing emissions.

the sticky situation with insurance companies is that if you do it without telling them, and then they find out, they can technicly sue you for lieing about what kind of car you had. which is fraud, saying you have a sixer for less cost than if you had the V8. But that is worst case senario.

the general responce to this swap i have heard is that is is more cost efficient to sell the sixer and buy the V8 model. but i havent priced out the two options.

Re: Motor swap

It seems like you would eventually save money with the switch compared to buying a V8 equipped car with the cost of insurance. Especially if you're young.

Re: Motor swap

actually it will save you lots of money to to sell the six just like 89 said. a few years ago i had a 91 RS with a 3.1 multiport F.I. after owning it a while i was sick of it being slow. i wanted to put a 305 in it and change the tranny to a manual. i found a motor for 900, then i was going to have to buy a new wiring harness, 3-400 more bucks, and a fuel injection manifold and all that crap another 900-1500 bucks. i didnt have that kind of cash then, so i traded the car off, i found a nice 90 rs camaro down in gate city virginia for 3500, i got 2500 for my sixer, i just paid 1000 and got what i wanted. a 305 and a 5 speed manual. was adult owned and garage kept.
