HELP - intake for '95 Celica ST

I'm looking at getting an intake for my '95 Celica ST to replace the stock box. I've looked at the Weapon R Dragon and Hyper short ram intakes, but I have no idea if those are any good. I'm more interested in this just for a fun project that I can do myself as a learning experience since I don't know too much about modding cars. I live in the Seattle area. Should I get cold air or short ram? Should I even bother, or should I get a stock K&N filter replacement or something?

What will give me the most gains for the least money and still be easy to put in myself?

The dragon intakes are GREAT intakes, they are made very well, a friend of mine has one on his maxima.

But just about every cone intake does the same thing, adds 5-8hp (regardless of what the ad says it gives, unless your car is choking itself to death), and adds a throatier sound under acceleration.

Dragon Intakes = 120 -150$
Generic w/ K&N Filter = 45%



Both do the same thing, you pick...

basically al intakes are roughly the same, i could make myself a cone filter but its all depending, the more air you let suck in your engine, the more chance you have of sucking shit like dirt in it...thats why cotten is more protective than the stuff the K&n and the others ones are made out of

What 91 Celica said is very true, and the cone filters are oiled, and require oiling regularly....every frew months, or they begin to whistle... hahhaa

Errr...K&N are cotton filters
Here`s what it says on the box if you dont believe me........

K&N air filter is made of surgical cotton gauze impregnated with oil for maximum filtration and maximum airflow.

Yes cotton is good for high flow and OK for filtration and yes, the more you suck into your engine the more chance you have of sucking in dirt etc but "paper" is better for filtration and not quite as good for airflow, standard airfilters are paper, and offer very good filtration properties.
There isnt alot available that will filter the air as well as a standard paper filter, alot of the airflow problems associated with standard paper filters is caused by the restricted airflow into the airbox and excesive piping.

Cone filters apear to offer better air intake due to the removal of alot of the piping so a more direct flow is gained with less bends etc, but often lose the benifits gained by sucking in hot air from the engine bay.

The best thing to get is either a cold air kit which will cost you more $$$$ or £££££ or get a replacement panel filter, K&N are very good and provide just about every panel filter available or you can do what I did and get them to custom make you one for not alot more cash, then enlarge the hole that feeds air into the base of the airbox and run a pipe to the front of the car, this will provide a ram air type effect and provide plenty of cold air for your motor.

Sigma, the link to intakes on your site doesn't work - it pops up a window and times out after about 30 seconds. I tried several times. I think I might just go with the K&N panel filter, but I was hoping someone out there maybe had a 6th gen Celica and knew of a particular short ram intake that worked really well for them. NialUSA, I like your idea of making a cold air tube that connects to the stock box. Would you use PVC or metal or what? Where would you connect it in the front of the car? Are the diagrams or guides to this type of thing out there?

first...cold air intakes are NOT worth the extra money...and risk

first off, cold air intakes really only give you less than 1Hp more than a Shortram, reasonons being (ive gone through this TONS of times and i really need to organise my bookmarks)your engine runs at 1200 degrees fairenhight, and under the enginge bay your running at an average of 190 degrees farenhiehgt (210 is dangerous, 220+ is lethal) by the time you suck in the "hot" short ram air and reches your intake ports and gets mixed in with the fuel...Its going to be HOTT air

CAI..when it enters and gets to your thorttle body its already gettigng hot, and by time time ir reaches your intake ports is HOTT air

solution...by the time both bits of air reach your intake ports its HOT AS FUCK air, but as we all know coleder air is denser, so more of it can be squeezed in a smaller space. the reason why its 1-2 Hp more is because iby the time the CAI hott air reches your intake ports theres an infidecimal amount of it more I.E. like this (not real #'s but close enough, give s a general idea)

either way cold air intakes arent worht the extra money, but thats just my Opinion basically because i live in semi wet area and cold air intakes have a much higher big risk of getting hydrolocked...dont get me wrong short rams still can get it its just ALOT easyer to get with cold air intakes, still semi hard to get either way unless you go thorugh a little uddle, and thers TONS of puddles around me...

if your really going for looks/ Hp then go with a WEAPON X or WEEAPON R intake, they look really nice and do the smae as any otehr short ram, but there alot more expensive...

GOTO Andysautosport.com and you can make your own CAI or short ram ...

ALWYAS use Chrome or something to theat extent, PVC dosent not reflect heat at all...Have you ever heard of a diamond, we all know diamonds basically cant be melted and reflect heat insanley well, well chroome is like the backside of a diamond and reflects heat very well...
