Question Air filters

I'm thinking about replacing the standard air filter with one of K&N's high performance filters but first I have a few questions. Does a high volume air filter in the stock air intake make an appreciable difference? If not I was looking at replacing the air intake, but the replacements pull air from the engine compartment? Does this make a significant improvement even though I'll probably be pulling hot air? Never tried any of this stuff before so I'm completely at a loss.

I've also been looking at those little resistors you can get that trick the ecu into thinking the incoming air is colder than it is so it ups the injector ratio. The sales sites all say there is no danger in doing this but I'm a bit skeptical. Can this cause problems or is is basically safe?

Re: Air filters

those resistors just make your car run really rich and get poor gas mileage.

KYN Panel filters don't do anything performance-wise unless you also remove the intake silencer. I would either get a K&N Panel filter and remove the intake silencer or just get or build an intake.

I figured it was something like that. Seemed far too simple to be a reasonable solution.

I was reading about the silencer as well. In the gen3 I think it's in the driver side front wheel fender. As far as I've been able to assertain, it's just attached to the end of the intake and could just be cut off. Do you know if that's correct? Would that be a better option or should I look at removing the whole filter box and getting a cone type filter? If I do that I assume it would be better to run some tubeing to the inside of the fender again and put the filter there so I continue to get cold air. I've just never done any sort of work on my car at all before (aside from replacing the battery or fuses or that sort of thing) so I'm trying to get all the info first.

Re: Air filters

yes, the silencer is a big horn that the air has to go through thats located in the fender. Its kinda hard to get to, but doable. I'm currently running a short ram with a cone filter bolted directly to the MAF. "cold air" is a bit overrated.

Re: Air filters

What do you mean by a short ram? To bolt to the MAF you just need one of those bolt on adapters that attach where the filter box goes right?

Re: Air filters

yes, or you can use machine screws to attach K&N Part # 0940 directly to your MAF (like I did)

Im not sure what motor you have, whether it be the vulcan or the duratec, but the popular K&N option for the duratec ford contour guys is the K&N RU-3530, MAF adapter, and a home made heatshield.

btw, dont waste your money on that resistor. It just tricks the ecu into dumping more (useless) fuel and hense the big loss of hp and gas mileage. Btw, one of the ranger guys with a vulcan dynoed with and without the resistor, and with it, he lost 20 whp.

Read about it here: http://www.rangerpowersports.com/for...d.php?t=141408

Re: Air filters

ya, the 0940 is for the 3.0 Duratec MAF. Vulcans use the same MAF as the 2.5L Duratec, so I suppose that filter you listed would work well for that.

Re: Air filters

I have the duratec 3.0 so I guess it's the #0940. I've gotten nothing but thumbs down on that resistor. I didn't think it was probably good, but the guy selling it arent the ones to ask, thats why I asked for the second opinion. Thanks guys.
