Radiator Fan Smoking...OH NO..!!

1995 ford thunderbird 4.6 V8 127K miles

Today, after a quick drive to the store and back, i noticed a smell. I get home, pop the hood...SMOKE.. White smoke (looks steamy) is coming directly from the middle of the fan, AND the fan IS NOT turning, even with the a/c on. The radiator is really really hot. The car has enough anti-freeze, and the anti-freeze holder is not hot, just slightly warm.

This, i believe is a direct effect from driving with a f**ked up mass air flow sensor. I asked my mechanic if i can drive the car with the maf sensor the way it is until i get my new one (this thursday), he said it's ok but will stall out on you.

Now, i should have NOT driven this car at all damnit. I remember like 2 days ago i smelt a funny smell, but thought nothing of it..TODAY, smoke smoke.. Anyway, what do you think the problem is on this car..? I think it's probably the thermostat not coming on..

BTW, the smell is like burning plastic/electrical, and my temp guage was rising alittle. No white smoke from my exhaust. No leaking antifreeze or broken hoses either.

Re: Radiator Fan Smoking...OH NO..!!

Tell me about it.

Anyways, it has to be the actual fan motor not turning over. Everything else is a-ok.

Re: Radiator Fan Smoking...OH NO..!!

If the smoke WAS coming from the fan motor and it smells like plastic it has probably seized. Can you spin the fan? Only try this with the engine cold. This would have nothing to do with the MAF sensor. You should know now that when something doesn't smell or feel right with your car to check it out before it causes more damage.

Re: Radiator Fan Smoking...OH NO..!!

Yeah it moves, but with a good push. It is the motor darnit.

2 hours prior i had a muffler shop chop off my mufflers, and i put on nice chrome tips (cats and resonator still on) and i was loving it.

Just when you have something you like, something else breaks. I seriously think ford has to install better radiator components. I remember 2 years ago, my 92 ford escort with 60K miles had the radiator literally EXPLODE.

Re: Radiator Fan Smoking...OH NO..!!

Dude, my fan motor did the same thing nearly 2 years ago. Sucked for me though because Ford wanted 330 bucks for a new fan assembly. They wouldnt just sell me the motor. I couldnt afford that. So I drove for 2-3 weeks w/o a radiator fan. I was hauling ass everywhere with the heater on lol, and it was always 80 degrees or more. I was forced to buy an aftermarket fan because I had no other choice. I knew it was a bad idea. I always had to keep the car moving for about a year and a half, until I had it shipped here, where there are junk yards and I got a fan from a wrecked 97. Just dont get an aftermarket fan. Find a stock one. They just burn up sometimes, dont blame yourself for driving. I think it was going to burn up no matter what.

Not everything is related to a MAF, I think you've figured that out...
