som help

Hey guys, my friend has a 1990 plymouth laser 1.8.He has a problem with his transmission i think.when he trys to go it will just feel like its in neutral but he can go in reverse fine.My brother said its the pulse generator sensor or something but me and my friend have no idea so ne help wud be greatful.If u need more info just ask thanks!
