Intake

I just recieved a Matrix Short Ram Intake System. An I'm a little conserned about how you are supposed to mount the Mass Air Flow Sensor to this intake because it doesn't have a predone mount for it.

Am I supposed to cut my own hole in the rubber mount inbetween the intake tube and the filter or what????

Thanks for your help...

Re: Intake

Doesn't come with a MAF cutout? How much was it?
All the shorrt rams I've seen (mine included) have the MAF mounted somewhere on the actual intake, normally a few inches after the filter. I've never heard of that brand...where'd you get it from? I guess you're gonna have to cut a hole, that matches exactly to the MAF, then you'll have to drill and tap some threads. I would rather just return it, and get another intake that has all of that work done; there's too much risk in screwing up the efficency of the intake if you start cutting holes into it, but that's just my opinion.

Re: Intake

Listen to Mustangman25, he knows what he's talking about. Never, unless you plan on keeping the car for the rest of your life, ever cut into factory equipment. First because if you plan on selling it, it depreciates the value. Second because if the equipment you bought is defective, then you have to stick with that same brand because now you have cut a hole just for it for the MAF. Go with AEM or Iceman for intakes, I never even heard of the brand you bought. Send it back and use the refund on one of the brands I mentioned.

Re: Intake

Thanks FocusFreak
I have an AEM ram air on my car and love it. I installed it in about an hour, and have had no problems whatsoever. It bolts right onto the car, with the support rod for the pipe even connecting to a facotry bolt location. All aluminum, robotically TIG welded, and it sounds great, plus it has a TIG welded mating box for the MAF sensor. When I go to sell the car down the road, I can put the stock intake back in without any noticable difference too.

Re: Intake

I love the advice, but the only problem is that I have a SOHC non Zetec motor so AEM or Iceman doen't make anything for me....

There should be some way to connect your intake to the MAF sensor. I bought a cheapie short-ram off of Ebay for my car (it's a Zetec though) and it fit right up to the MAF. I'm sure you know NOT to try and bypass the MAF sensor, the car will not run without it.

The instructions were so poor, it took a while to figure it out. It's almost like the were written on a napkin and photocopied! That and it sucked all kind of hot air in from the engine compartment, making the car run like s*it with in the summer, especially with the air on. But it was only $30, so I shouldn't have expected much.

Too bad you have the SPI motor, I don't know how much performance stuff there is for that one. Check out www.focussport.com,nopi.com or steeda.com

Re: Intake

Ahh...I don't know of many parts for the SPI, if any. Sorry I can't help you any more, but I really have no knowledge of the SPI, so I don't want to give you bad advice.

Re: Intake

Dude, I would just return that to where you bought it and find one on eBay that has a MAF sensor cutout. Anything you do to that would probably make it leak so bad, that you might as well just get some el cheapo intake from eBay...unless you want to do some serious work, and build a MAF box, then that intake isn't going to work. I would also send a pissy email to that company about selling a product that isn't completley developed.
