oil light won't go out

My oil liight is coming on in my 2001 Dodge Intrepid and will not go out. However, the car is not overheating, the engine light does not come on, the engine seems to be fine. I even noticed tonight - that when I shifted into 3rd gear (auto transmission), that the light went out and then came back on when I shifted back into drive. Does anyone have any ideas?

Go to a shop and have them do an oil pressure check. If it's less than 45 psi, you have a problem. If pressure is good, you more than likely have a faulty sensor. Also, do you hear any loud noises coming from the engine?

No, engine sounds fine.

I'm sure it's the sensor; it's only eight bucks. Just to be on the safe side, get an oil pressure check just to make sure; wouldn't want you to make a $6,000 mistake. Just FYI, if you have the 2.7, at your next oil change use synthetic oil 5W-30.

Thanks for the advice. I just talked to the garage and they are taking it in Monday to have a look. I had the rack n pinion steering replaced not too long ago and they said, they would check first to see if a wire is rubbing, then check the oil pressure.

I am having problems with the oil light coming on our 2001 Dodge Intrepid. We had a new fuel pump put on and it still runs with a light tapping sound but we don't drive it and holds no oil pressure when the engine heats up. Do you think it is the engine. I just can't imagine after 82,000 miles and we have been loyal in oil changes. However, when they installed the oil pump they said it had oil slug because we used Pensoil as we always thought it was a good oil but found out it wasn't. Can you help me figure out what it is as you are a mechanic and we just are hitting our heads against a wall. We have had it towed all over and then we decide to have it towed back because on checking out engines from Jasper it costs around $5200 to $6500 including labor. Could it possible be anything else? Thanks in advance for your input.

This is a reply to ripusoff, not starting thread!!!

If you have a 2.7 engine you are probably ready to join several thousand others who have lost their engine. The 2.7's had a design fault that causes sludge to form due to lack of enough oil at the top end, which caused the oil there (regardless of brand) to sluge up. Many go with much less than you have as far as mileage goes. The only people not having this problem are using synthetic oils, or are plain lucky. You can read horror story after horror story on many web pages by looking on search engines for Intrepid problems. These engines cost anywhere from 3-6K to replace. I have read a lot of information on these, as i have one with 102K on it we bought in a rush due to a traffic accident and had little time to really look. I am running synthetic in it and hope that the former owner either did that as well, or replaced the motor already. If you wind up having to replace the motor, call Jasper. Don't buy a used one probably ready to go too.
If you don't have the 2.7 maybe you can resolve another cheaper way.

Is the engine a 2.7 ?2.7 engines do have a weak bottom end. Probally neeeds a crankshaft kit.Do not let it go, rods will knock and hole in block.
I know what Jasper's warranty is on the 2.7 is.The oil has to be changed exactly 3,000 miles,not before or after 3,000 and keep the reciepts for the oil changes.There is a cheaper way,a 2.7 to 3.2 conversion,I have done one.You need a 3.2l engine,3.2 computor,heater hose,a/c lines radatior and a/c condensor,front of exhaust and throttle cable.The 3.2l engine fits in with no problems.You also need the power steering pump and make sure the a/c compressor is still bolted on the 3.2l engine.My father bought a Chrysler concorde with a blown 2.7 and I converted it to a 3.2.It had more power,ran better without that piece of junk 2.7.I heard Jaspers warrenty on the 2.7 from a Jasper rep that comes in my father's shop once in a while

If you read the earlier posts, he said the engine is not making any sounds, therefore, there's no need to replace the engine. It's more than likely a faulty sensor. Don't create more work and waste money if you don't have to.

Yes, you are right. But another member who HAS a problem has asked for advice later on, so there are two conversations going on two different problems being discussed. May be better for second member to start a new thread.

2.7 engines do have a weak bottom end.My father and I have put crankshaft kits in 2.7 engines and the oil light goes off.Only had one come back,the new crankshaft in the kit was no good,An engine machine shop confirmed that.Th engine machineshop measured with a micrometer and the new crankshaft was out of spec.

if your problem is still there.. please follow my advice.. I have a 2000 SE Intrepid with the 2.7L. With the mileage it has(around 180 000 miles), I only had one minor problem.. oil pressure light... the problem cost me about 20$ : please, just change the wire from the oil pressure switch...if that is your problem.. tell me.. Chrysler will give your money back..
