'95 Passat Wagon 2.8L V6

Started overheating thought it might be thermostat. I haven't had the chance to change the thermostat yet, due to inclement weather. It has been sitting for 5 days. Today I tried to start it. It cranks but does not fire. The coolant light is flashing. Could a bad coolant sensor be preventing it from starting? Thanks!
