Question 02 Cav humming noise

2002 cavalier

i checked to see if anyone else posted this question couldnt find anything.

i notice this mostly when im on the highway, while im driving straight ahead, that there is a fairly loud humming noise coming from my car, and it gets louder when im turning to the left. but when i turn to the right, it stops all together until i start going straight again. it almost makes my car sound like an airplane.

i duno much about cars other than how to drive them hehe. might anyone know what this is and how much the chevy dealer will stick it to me? Thanks!

Re: 02 Cav humming noise

Check your tires. It sounds to me like you have a "cupped" tire. This results from driving on a tire that was under-inflated. Put your hand on top of the tire and see if you can sense it is "sunken" in the middle. I had a similiar problem before.

A cupped tire can also be from a a blown damper. Cupped tires are noticed by vibrations. That humming you have is probably a wheel bearing. They usually result from a seal going bad. It is also an easy fix if you have the tools. www.teamforwardmotion.com for a how-to.

I would aggree with CRJ wheel bearing on the right hand side, but it's best to do both at the same time as they usually go around the same time!
