2001 gt stereo

im trying to put in an after market stereo in my car. when i remove the factory there is no power for the new deck. im pretty sure it is because of the factory amp in the trunk. is there anyway to bypass it?

Regardless of the amp, there should be an orange wire which always has 12v regardless of ignition key position, and there should also be yellow wire which has 12v only when the key is turned to accessory or run. If there is no voltage on the orange or yellow wire you most likely have a blown fuse.

You can bypass the amp by running new wires directly from the stereo to each speaker. Just remember to cut the speaker wires so they are no longer connected to the factory wiring and tape the ends up of the now disconnected factory wiring.

01GT Monsoon Stereo replacment guide.

First thing you want to do is get a wiring harness. Yeah its kind of a Duh thing, but I like to be thourough. You will also need an antenna adapter, since Pontiac uses those accursed small ones.

Next, Pull the deck, the dash ring around the stereo just unsnaps (i used my bare hands) Take note that the little black ring around the ingnition will pop out. This is normal. Next remove the deck itself. You will need a mini-ratchet or a nut driver to remove the retaining screws, as they are in actuality a 7mm bolt.

Once you pull the deck, you need to look in the dash where your deck was. There is a black bundle of cables in the left side of the hole, closest to the ignition. You need to VERY carefully cut open the black material covering the wire bundle. (Its not quite tape, its not quite fabric) You are looking for a large BROWN wire. This is the switched 12v+ power line. You need to tap into that to power your aftermarket deck. I would suggest one of those cheapie plastic screw on wiretap adapters so you dont have to actually cut into the wire, thats what I used, very handy.

You're almost done at this point. Just mate the harness up with the aftermarket deck as you normally would (I will assume you know how to do this part).
Last but not least. Your aftermarket deck will have a amp remote wire along with the other wires in the harness. It is IMPERITIVE that you attach this to the amp remote wire that is on the GM wiring harness or you will get no sound at all. Ok here is the checklist:

->Buy a Wiring Harness, Wire nuts, Antenna Adaptor, and a Wire tap screw in plug. the Screw in plug comes in a package with screw in wire joiners. I got mine at wally world for maybe 2 bucks for the package.

->Unsnap the dash plastics

->Pull the deck

->Use the wiretap adaptor to run a switched 12v+ line to the wiring harness, or wire directly to your aftermarket deck.

->Mate the wires on the harness you bought to the harness for the deck(assuming it has a plug and harness as opposed to bare wires)

->Be sure to mate the Amp remote wire on the new deck to the one in the harness.

->Install Antenna adaptor

->Put the new aftermarket deck in

->Put all of the dash hardware back on.

->Turn it on and you should be golden.

The Monsoon deck uses a data signal to power itself up and down. (which is why the stereo will keep playing until you open the door.) Unless the GT comes standard with the monsoon system, there was never any mention of it. So basically there is no need for correction unless you want to confirm the fact that the monsoon system is standard equipment on the GT platform. On the other hand, even the base model stereo has a data line from the BCM to tell it to shut down or stay on, etc. I believe it is the purple wire ajacent to the orange 12v constant wire in the main harness. Unfortunately I referenced the wrong model year.

He should tie in to the brown "accessory feed" wire off the ignition switch instead of the orange HVAC feed. Other wise he will need to switch the ignition switch to the "run" position in order to play his stereo, whereas with the acc. feed all he needs to do is put the ignition switch to "acc" to listen to music when the engine is off and not have the blower motor running and ignition systems on.

As far as "hacking" into the amp, he asked about bypassing it. What I explained was exactly that: How to bypass the amp. Either way he does it, he wil still be "hacking" into the amp.

He had mentioned the monsoon amp in the trunk, which comes with the deck. To my knowlege it isnt standard equipment though. I wondered why ACC didnt leave my stereo on, which is strange because I asked a tech at the dealership. Maybe ill go back in and try the purple. Thanks for the tip.

As far as hacking the amp, I was refering to running original wires to the dash...not something I would want to do.

The accessory wire you need is brown in colour off of the ignition switch. The purple wire I mentioned is, as far as I can tell anyway, the data wire that you mentioned earlier. Good luck.
