Okay, I have an '84 Caprice with 62,350 miles on it, with a 305 and 4 BBL Rochester Carb. Pretty much all stock. Anyways, lately especially when the engine hasn't completely warmed up yet, when I get going from a stop the engine bogs down to about 250 RPM almost dies (sometimes it does die) and then gets going. Once its done bogging, I can accellerate as hard or slow as I want and It'll be fine. My idle is set at 500 RPM, but when the engines cold it automatically idles at 1000 RPM (2000 if I don't kick the choke down) The timing is set dead on, and it has a brand new fuel filter. I ran some carb cleaner fuel treatment through my system, and even sprayed carb cleaner directly into the carb. Could the carb need a rebuild? Its a year younger than the car and the rest of the engine and has a little over 100k on it. I got no codes on the ECM, but when a different computer was hooked up to thr car, it gave me a code 43, which is the electronic spark control unit. Could that be causing the issue? Please help, its getting worse by the day, and I really need the car. Thanks

Re: Bogging from the start... Carbuertor Problems???
I needed a rebuild at 80k on my 84.
What you're describing is a choke issue (dumping fuel). Do you have any black smoke out of the tailpipe? Reset your computer and see if the 43 comes back. Would like someone else to chime in on the code 43 and advise testing procedures. |

Re: Bogging from the start... Carbuertor Problems???
Sounds to me like the throttle valve in the carb is leaking. This is usually the culprit when a Q-jet bogs off the line. If you decide to rebuild the carb, all of the necessary should be included with the kit.
The first time I attempted to rebuild a Q-jet, it looked very hard to do... but it wasn't. Just take your time, clean everything well, lay out your parts on the table like they were placed in the carb, and don't mess with the jets... at least not until you fully understand how to adjust them. Be very precise when measuring the float level. If you are nervous about messing it up, find an old carb in a salvage yard exactly like the one in your car, and rebuild it. Then swap it for the one in the car and see if you did it right.
