Question 305 700r4?

Hey guys can you tell me a little or give me a link to some where I can read about the 305TPI engine. My friend is looking at a camaro heres the add.

1991 Z28, just about to turn 126000K 305 TPI with a 700r4, T-tops, wleded in K.Black subframe connectors, 4 new tires, fresh tune-up, new windshield, new diverside window motor. new hood "shock absorbers" Brakes are half life. New pioneer 6x9's car runs and drives smooth, has a clear title, and has never been in an accident This car needs a paint job, and a new rear hatch which i will include at the sale of this car. Car has some rust but nothing major.

Also whats a 700r4? Is the 305TPI worth moding?

700R4 is GM's 4 speed auto trans with torque converter lock up
305 TPI with 126K is really past its prime. If he wants less than 3k for the car it would be a good deal IF the car is as described.
If your friend does buy the car tell him not to mod the 305, not worth it..especially with 126k miles. Instead save the money and buy a 350 or even a 383. This will be the best "mod" you could do to a 305...replace it with more cubes.

Re: 305 700r4?

damn really? Well the guy only wants 1500. If the motor is not worth rebuilding though then shoot. What about supercharging or turboing it?

Re: 305 700r4?

for the price of a super charger and or turbo you could get a solid 350 crate engine that runs steady and solid and not have to worry to much about repairs

Re: 305 700r4?

Ok heres the run down. My friend will probably want like 3XXhp and Tq. He wants a quick car but hes not going for an all out dragger or anything. So if hes going for say 350hp would it still be cheaper to buy a create motor?

Re: 305 700r4?

You can get more than 300 HP out of a stock v-8 for about the same price you would pay for a new crate motor. GM offers a 4 bolt crate @ 290 Hp 500 before powerband break point. There is also some 350 HP crate motors but those are all over 3K.

Re: 305 700r4?

best bet to run with is to get the car as is.

i disagree that the 305 is worn out, if it was proporly maintained it should be fine, i ran my 89 RS with a TBI 305 to 150,000 miles and it was fine. till a radiator shop dropped a nut down the intake and blew it. but they are poor performance engines. they are great truck motors, make low end power, but bad high end power. If he wants the 300-350hp he should get the GMPP 350/330hp vortec headed small block. with the addition of headers and perhaps a cam, he should easily make is power levels.

as far as an LT1, its a viable option, several guys on the forum have done it, and from what ive heard its a great swap. however its a costly, and consuming task. far more than the engine must be changed. computers, wiring harnesses, sensors, cooling systems, fuel delivery, exhaust. the GMPP 350 is a direct bolt in.

That right there really puts a damper on things. There is no LT1 style intake for those heads and only 1 TPI intake, and it costs $300+ from Scoggins Dickey. I like to stay away from Vortec heads because it severely limits induction choices.

By "past its prime" I meant that it wouldn't be worth it to mod because trying to get more power out of it will put more stress on it and end its life quickly.

As a school student his budget is going to rule out a crate engine...probably.
Go to a machine shop and see if they have any good 350 blocks for sale. have it tanked and preped. Then over time he can buy parts for it and slowly put together a good running powerful engnie that won't break the bank in one big hit.
Other considerations are...Transmission, a stock trans with 150kish miles won't last long behind a 400 hp stump puller...He'll need to have it rebuilt. Differential...may or may not take that kind of power..depends on what is in there now...
He'll also need a custom prom chip for the engine when all is said and done, and don't buy a "custom" chip from anyone. Read and learn how to do it yourself, it is pretty easy once you jump in with both feet.
