Pretty Sure it is Fuel Pump: Easy to Do?

I am pretty sure my 97 4WD Chevy Blazer needs a fuel pump. Is there no end to the Blazer problems? Symptoms: Hard to start when cold. Easy to start when warm. Car hesitates when I accelerate quickly. When driving at cruising speeds around 55mph, you can feel the car occasionally hesitate. Reduced gas mileage 14 in city (used to get 16). I have recently tuned it up, plugs the works.

It is hard to change out a fuel pump. I am a novice at this. Should I leave this one to more seasoned veterans?

Search these forums for topics and keywords matching "CPI", "Fuel regulator", "Fuel Filter" and "Ignition switch". What you are describing sounds symptomatic with trouble in these areas. As for the fuel pump? Easy work, really if you are mechanically inclined. It's located inside the tank, so it will require the draining and temporary storage of fuel before you begin. Make sure to get the "strainer sock" to go with that new pump, and splice in a fresh wire harness. The connectors sometimes go south on them. Do a little reading on your injection systems and before going totally ape on a pump - get a fuel pressure test done. If your fuel pressures are good, no need to hassle yourself over the pump at all.

However, before you do any of the above - when was the last time the truck had a *complete* tune-up? You will be amazed what a little TLC will do for you when you think there is a serious problem.

Air filter replacement
PCV valve
Re-check plug gaps (0.051")

All of the above and possibly more may have to be done along with what you have already done. Plugs and wires are not enough. Good luck, and check back with us!
