1996 ice warning on overhead display

How does the ice warning display work, mine seems amazingly accurate. Even if I have my plow on the front, it does not seem to be related to temperature. I have seen the temp be 36F and there was sleet and it went on. 32F and no ice it would not go on 28F and ice it went on. I originally figured when the temp was below freezing they would just warn you but mine actually seems to detect ice irregardless of the temp reading. Just thought I would report on something that does work on my truck!!

Re: 1996 ice warning on overhead display

Mine turns on an "ICE" warning anytime the outside temps are at, or below 37 degrees. It then goes away after a few minutes. On my 95, according to the manual, it is designed merely to be a reminder at start-up time which will clear itself after a few minutes of driving. It simply works.

On startup, when the temperature is below a certain degree, it will show ice as a warning only and then disappear after a minute or so.

It did it to mine too while driving which was weird.

The temp was dropping fast and the warning came up.

Re: 1996 ice warning on overhead display

The outside temperature must be below 38/37F before the word ICE is illuminated. It is only illuminated as a warning, as mentioned above.

The temperature itself is updated based on certain conditions. First, if the ignition has been OFF for over 4 hours, the computer will retrieve the current temperature when the key is first turned ON. It will then hold that same reading until the vehicle speed meets a certain criteria. If the vehicle was not OFF for atleast 4 hours, when the ignition is turned ON, the display will read the last tempeature reading when the vehicle was on. It will not updated unless the vehicle is in motion.

If the vehicle speed is less than 18mph the temperature display is not updated. This is because the sensor for the temperature display is near the radiator. You will get false readings if the temperature were to be updated at this low of speed.

If the vehicle speed is between 18-36mph, the temperature is updated at a 'slow rate'.

If the vehicle speed is over 35mph for longer than 2 minutes, the temperature will be updated accordingly.

This applies for sure for 1998s, and possibly other years.

Ice warning

If I remember correctly if you remove the antenna it will cause an Ice reading as well. (when it is cold anyway. It may have something to do with that wire twisted around the antenna

From what I understand that wire twisted around the antenna is to reduce wind noise nothing more. If you take the antenna off and whip it through the air by hand it doesn't make a noise.
