WINDSTAR CODE 171&174 FIX
I'am Planning On Fixing The Code 171 & 174.after Reading
The Great Thread On This Subject.have A Question What Gaskets Will I Need.valve Cover,upper Intake.does The Lower Intake Come Off In This Fix.is That Where The 8 Isolator Bolts Are.if So Do You Just Take Old Bolts Out And Replace With New Bolts Without Taking The Lower Intake Off Thanks Gitzy |

I believe that you do NOT remove the lower intake manifold.
You DO remove the upper intake manifold, to replace the gaskets.... |

wiswind is correct. When I did my '99, I did upper and lower.
But more has been learned since then...and in MOST cases the "lower (aluminum ) intake" manifold-to-head seals/gaskets are NOT the leakers. Usually the leaks are confined to the upper intake manifold (plastic) parts....and usually this means "isolator bolts". |

I think that the leaks occur between the upper and lower manifold (due to the isolator bolts of course). I think the port seals should be replaced or examined at the very least too. These do not require the removal of the lower however but I don't think the port seals were mentioned in this thread.
