Thumbs down Extra Shifts

Not looking for anything but a place to Release Stress...

I work for a Corporation where we own a facility but we have another Company running it for us. I am the Owners Rep ( Management ) so when I'm here I am the Owner.
I am the only person in our Corp that works here, everyone else that's here works for the other Company.

Our main office is about 20 miles away.

So last week they ( my office ) laid off both of our part time replacements.
These guys come in to cover if someones sick, vacation, day off what have you.
They are just here to have someone here and if something goes wrong they call me.
They are also to go to one of our other sites if they're needed.

I asked the office why they laid them off and they said because they couldn't justify having them around as there wasn't enough work for them and also so they could get their Unemployment going.
Also they thought that this would be a good way to reduce costs.

Fair enough.

But, if you now need me to work on my days off, how can you say that you don't have any work for them? Well, errr, I ahh... Yeah never mind.

I rearranged my schedule a few months ago so that I work every second Saturday so I can take off the following Monday to get stuff done in my personal life ( pay bills, groceries etc). I work long hours and we're far away from town so even getting a haircut is a logistical nightmare.

It should be mentioned that before I got the position that I'm in now I worked between 100 - 110 hours per week for 6 months straight for them! Yeah, do the math.

Ok, here's the best part. Now, I agreed to work this Saturday,

I asked why and they said that the fella that is supposed to come in can't ( he's always pulling shit like that ) and since they laid off the replacements...well, they have no one to cover.

Also, would I be available on Monday? Why? Well they don't have anyone available to cover my shift now that they laid the replacements off...

( Sorry for the language) What the fuck is wrong with these people? They come in here, do fuck all as the place is basically shut down, if anything requiring a brain is required they call me, they get paid well and they can't even cover their own shifts? Jesus!!

Plus our office is so short sighted that now they have no one to cover on Mondays?
Reduce costs? Do they have any idea on how much overtime they'll be paying me?

Like I said I'm used to workin long hours. But, this just pisses me off badly.

What kind of no mind, short sighted fuck ups are we employing?

Arrgh..

You've set their expectation high. You need to tell them 'No' from time to time.

Re: Extra Shifts

Welcome to the corporate world. Departmental restructures and layoffs, followed by indiscriminate hiring and more restructures - companies all follow the same pattern. As a member of management (as opposed to staff) you are expected by the company to make sacrifices - it's up to them to compensate you accordingly.

Re: Extra Shifts

sounds like the "Bean counters" are running the show ...

What would happen if you called in "sick" on the next Monday?

What would your company do if you took some "stress leave" from working too much?

And stop working all those long hours. They know they can "count" on you because you have done everything they asked in the past.
