Horn problem

This evening we left a restaurant to find our 99 SL1 with the horn blaring. tried to push the horn buttons with no response except for a little sound variation in the horn. started the car up to find out the horn wouldn't shut off. after driving the car a bit, the horn and the sound died off. horn doesn't work anymore...any ideas what happened and how to fix it?

Re: Horn problem

possibley the horn shorted out(most likey the relay), after being on so long, the fuse blew. if your horn has two wires the relay is in the fuse box by trhe battery, if it has three wires, the relay is internal. the three wire style must be tested with a multimeter. for the two wire style - first check the fuse, if it is blown, replace it, but be prepared to pull it again if the horn blows. if it does blow, pull the relay, if the horn stops, replace the relay with another relay for testing, if the horn stays off, test the horn buttions on the wheel, if they now work normally, the relay is bad. if anything other then the above happens, farther testing with a multimeter is needed.

I screwed my horn up royally this summer trying to fix a similar problem. Took out a three wire horn, tried jimming riggin' a two wire horn to work, worked for a while but then I had the continual blaring problem until it died out. How do I fix my horn now????? And what was that third wire for anyways? Thanks.

Re: Horn problem

its hidden up somewhere inside the bumper. you can test the relay by swaping it with another known good relay (like A/C, foglamps, or fuel pump)

Re: Horn problem

I have this same problem with my 97 SL2

I have a 3 wire horn.
So I guess I just need to change the horn out with a new one?

I have the fuse out because I took it out before it blew because this has happend before and I was hornless for a few months, then one day it just worked again. then went on a blowing rampage. Now I'm up for inspection and it doesn't work.

Re: Re: Horn problem

don't assume, test it. buy a $5 test light. of the three wires, one should have ground, one should have power always, and the last should have power only with the horn button pressed.
