98 Regal engine runs fine; can't get into gear

I'm new & I've looked at all threads but can't find specific answer to my problem. Car had no problems except low coolant light coming on sporadically, though fluid seems to be ok. Was driving along and the car just started coasting. Engine never cut off but couldn't give it any gas. Engine starts fine everyday - no weird noises, smells, or warning lights. Idles at 1000 rpm but when i try to engage the gears it just revs-no drive or reverse. Told its not a tranny problem. Possibly a gear linkage problem or throttle problem. Had it towed twice to repair places but no one can seem to figure out the problem. thought it would be simple but i guess not. please help!
