prominent hood scoop vs flush hood scoop?

It may be because some models are base and others are GT, but I see that mustangs either have a hood scoop that is flush with the hood, e.g., the surface is flat with a mesh at a slight angle whereas other models have a noticeable "bump" for the scoop.

What are the pros and cons of these types? Is it purely aesthetics? Can a mustang with a flush scoop be interchanged with a hood with a prominent hood scoop?

Re: prominent hood scoop vs flush hood scoop?

I believe the GT Model has the "Bump" scoop (after '98 anyway) and they have no functionality, just for looks. I've head of people drilling into the plastic to make it functional though, not sure if this would create any problems in rainy weather...

I don't believe the 99's had the raised scoop either. I think they started in 00. It's a way to easily distinguish between a GT and a coupe. Plus it looks pretty cool. But stock, it's non-functional.

I like the '03 base model hood. It is the reverse inward scoop. It isn't as common as the 99-02(obviously) and I just think it gives it a racy look, kinda like the Cobra.(except one instead of two).

Re: prominent hood scoop vs flush hood scoop?

My favorite has to be the 03 cobra dual inward reverse scoops.

Wait a minute... so the scoop, whether flush or raised have no functionality?!

But they had a mesh and stuff... that's all for looks???

This is news to me.

... does anyone still use a functional top scoop or have they all switched to getting the cold air intake from the bottom?

Re: prominent hood scoop vs flush hood scoop?

The 2 small inlets on my 95 GT are functional, but I doubt they do much, since they are so small.

You can make the Scoops on those 2000 Models functional, but it does require tool work.

i did it, i cut out the lil plastic peices in my honey comb thing, and cut out the fiberglass that led into the hood, then i crazy glued the plastic peice in place. the onli thing is that its a regular hood scoop, (not the gt one) actauly i was gonna ask if anyone wanted to sell their gt hood scoop or have any xtra ones?

Re: prominent hood scoop vs flush hood scoop?

well i was thinking more in terms of making the air actually flow into the intake manifold, kinda like a ram air

I can't seem to find aftermarket hoods with a functional hood scoop. It seems like everyone favors taking the air from BELOW the car, as opposed to the top... regardless, I think it looks cooler to have a functional top hood scoop
