A/c To Use Or Not

My Question Is About Using My A/c Or Not. Do I Have To Use The A/c That Is In My Car??????? I Know That Its Hooked Into The Ecu. But What If I Dont Want To Use It??? Can I Run The Car With Out It????? Your Help Will Be Greatful.

hmm...please don't tell me your AC is on as long as your engine is running (I bet it's really cold in the winter).

Anyways, yes you can drive the car without turning on the AC.

Unless you are asking about removing the AC compressor out of the engine bay. It would be a waste of time to remove it, cause it won't give you anymore horsepower by doing so.

At this point, I know alot of anal people in their mind thinking trying to prove me wrong by posting a power to weight ratio issue. Before you make yourself look stupid, think really hard about what I said first.

you are correct in saying it doesn't add horse power but it does free up about 1 Hp that you may loose through parasitic loss. plus if you remove all of the AC/power steering equipment you lose a good bit of weight.

I have dyno sheets somewhere from before and after AC/power steering removal, and it shows about 2 whp more after removal. And also a dyno sheet of AC on and AC off which shows a little difference also.

In my honest opinion though it is not worth the hassle. It is a good deal of work to remove all that crap and you will only free up about 2 whp. plus if you live in a warm area you may regret not having your AC.

ummm, it's not the weight of it that causes a HP/torque loss. The ac compressor runs off of the serpentine or V belt on the front of the engine. The added belt of the ac compressor adds more friction, causing more strain on the engine (even though it is very minimal).

Nothing to do with weight at all.

As for the original question...I am really sorry if you have gone this far into the winter with your ac on the whole time.

Didn't you think..."hey, this is rediculous. I have the ac on and I am freezing my ass off. But, why do I have the option of turning the ac off?? The switch goes to "off".....maybe I can turn it off!!!"

Not sure if you were talking to me or the other guy here. but I said it was a parasitic loss, which is a quicker easier way of saying exactly what you said. And as far as the wieght thing you lose weight by dropping all the AC stuff (don't forget -100 lbs = .1 faster times)

The prox. 1HP lost form parasitic loss you are talking about is that regarding while the AC being operating?

The AC compressor pulley free spins when it is not operating, so if there is any power lost there will not even be measureable.

By throwing out the junks that has been sitting inside your car/trunk for ages will be a better idea than removing the AC components

well if you dont want to use the a/c system, then yes you can take it out. i took mine out because it doesnt work but a/c is a really nice luxury to have.

Im not talking about my ac being on in the winter and all this stuff you guys are arguing about im talking about swaping my engine out. Im sorry I put it in there wrong. I was wanting to know about wether or not I had to use my ac when swaping out my motor. becuse i know that it hooks into the ecu. I was wanting to know if it would throw a check engine light. But i found it allready i called a pro shop and they told me it wouldnt thanks for the help tho.

In a way you are right, the ecu only detects if the AC is being operating or being shut off.

When the AC is being use, the ecu will recieve a signal or detects a RPM drop, then the ecu will do it's job of kicking up the RPM a bit while the engine is idling to prevent it to stall.

removing the AC componets in most cases (depends on vehicle) will not affects the preformance of the engine.
