z31's were made from 84-89 and z32's were made from 90-96 here in the US...the code symbolizes the chasis number.
Z31... here are pictures of both...  Z32...  BTW: this is sean wagner's Z32...(i am guessing this is an older pic of his car)

 Z31 83-89 "Fairlady Z/300ZX" with VG30E(T) in USA and Japan, 200ZR with RB20DET in Japan only, 200ZG with VG20E(T) in Japan only, and 300ZR with VG30DE (first gen.)  Z32 89-99 Fairlady Z/300ZX with VG30DE(TT) second gen. in USA and Japan.

it was offered to japan only...it was a z31 (84-89 300zx) with a rb20det drivetrain from the R32(89-94?) skyline. besides the engine, it was identical to the z31 here in america...

well it was still a Z car but it only had a 2.0 Liter engine (RB20DET)in it...so they had to change it to 200Z and the R probably was just added so it sounds cooler...
 EDIT: actually now that i think about it, the R probably stands for Racing or something of that nature. like in skyline GT-R...they added the R to symbolize higher performance (racing), i guess. im sure someone here has a more precise explanation for the R.

k3 is correct... 200ZR= 2.0 liter, 300ZX= 3.0 liter, blah-blah-blah.... Same Z31 chassis code but different names depending on engine... God, I love Nissan!
