burnt out '80 240D hazard switch

The hazard switch to my 1980 240D mercedes burnt out (mother-in-law spilled coffee into it). and a replacmenet box costs over $100!!! Is there a way that I can just take a flasher from an american car, and wire it in somehow?

1.) take it apart and try to clean it
2.) check on ebay for one
3.) www.pgauto.com (or your local junkyard with an 80 or older MB in it)
