99 Cherokee rear end knocks when stopping

I recently purchased a 99 Cherokee Sport and noticed a potential rear end problem. Just before it comes to a complete stop the is a single knock and forward movement of the rear end. I cant pinpoint it exactly but it feels as if the body stops and the rear axle doesnt (if that makes sense). I dont know where to start. Rear end, suspension or trans? I would like to know what Im up against before taking it to the shop.

I would start with an inspection of the bushings for the rear suspension.

If the single knock that you are refering to feals like mine did. Check for play in the drive shafts, indicating wore u-joints. Best of luck. Also if you dont find the prolbem, a good trail ride will.

Are your rear brakes working properly? You'll get a knock if they're worn or not working. You can raise the vehicle, put it in drive and hit the brakes. See if the rear wheels stop.

I tried some experimenting with my knocking problem. The brakes are fine. And the knock does not happen when I stop very slowly or stop the car while in neutral. Drivetrain problem? Where to start before I throw my money away at the shop.

Check the universal joints. Put emergency brake on and shift from D to R back and forth, or put car on jackstands, tranny in "N" and turn driveshaft by hand back and forth. Listen for problem. Good luck
