5R55E No Third Gear

I have A 1998 4X4 with a 5R55E auto trans that lost third gear.
it shifts from 1st to 2nd ok and when it shifts to 3rd there is nothing
there, does not even to appear to have 3rd. if it is manualy shifted
from 1st to 2nd and hold in 2nd it will shift into overdrive, shift into
drive and there still is nothing there. (no problems with reverse)
Pulled the pan off and fuild does not appear to be burnt or no metal
dirt in pan. Does anyone have any ideal what is wrong. truck has 115000
miles on it

I have a '99 ranger with the 4r44e and It sounds like the speed shift sensor on the back of your tranny has bit the dust. It went out on mine and it wouldn't shift out of first, I could drop it down in to second but no third or forth.

Re: 5R55E No Third Gear

Oh yeah one more thing, next time you pull the pan you might want to put a shift kit in it. They're $30 from transgo and makes quite a difference in the way it shifts. Just a suggestion.

Re: 5R55E No Third Gear

Try adjusting the band. Theres two band adjustments on the driver side above the shift linkage. The rear most is the (I will call it intermediate) band. Anyways, losen the big nut alittle, then hold it stationary. Then turn in the center stud (8mm) clockwise (to run stud inward). If that stud will go almost flush to nut then the band is broke. Its actually 2nd your missing. Transmission guys look at the shift pattern as 1st, 1st and a half, 2nd, 3rd, od, lu

Good luck
