Re: still need some answers

Both se and gxl come with lsd stock.
The se has 4 lug wheels like my base model and the gxl has 5 lug. You can convert from 4 to 5 lug by switching hubs.
But the lsd's from 89-91 are viscous (eww) and the 86-88's are mechanical. Take your pick. An lsd is better than no lsd (except when the viscous shears, then its just as bad).

Personally, the 88 doesn't sound like a bad deal.

Oh, and use periods please.

Re: still need some answers

It has clutches to work the differential instead of fluid pressure to work.

You could get a feed floor bar or AUTO-EXE bar set, some pillow ball mounts or just weld two peices of angle iron from the front uniframe to the rear ( I wouldn't suggest that one but alot of people do this on high hp unibody cars).

Re: still need some answers

The "mechanical" is actually called a clutch type lsd. it uses clutch plates sanswitched together and locks up pretty good in a strait line. they dint grip very well at low speeds so cone gears are usually use to provide a pre-load and if it sips under power it has cams to push the plates harder.

the Viscous has plates also but with no fiction material. each plate connected to the right wheel is sandwitched between two plateds coneected to the left and vice-versa. the plates have notches cut through them to allow the viscous fluid to flow through. the whole stack us dunked in a pot of goo. the goo creates the lockup between the two wheels. the more slip the more the heat and the more the goo expands witch makes more lockup.

clutch types wear out over time but dont ship power unexpectedly from one wheel to the other

but too much heat will turn the goo in a viscous into water. ive brought many a viscous type to their knees on the track

Re: still need some answers

s5 (89-92) gxl does not have lsd. only the "GTUs" and TII have lsd in the s5 cars
