A couple questions: Fuel and Oil Pressure

The steel fuel lines coming from my tank are leaking. The tubing is about $20 with $250 labor, I want to do it myself. Has anyone done this? I am fairly capable , but how do I bend the steel tubing? I have dropped a tank before, so I am not so worried about that, I just want to know how to make the straight tubing bend into place.
Also, I have an oil leak. I keep on it and will look to fix it soon, however, my oil pressure will drop to almost nothing after driving awhile; even though there will be no overheating or anything. Why does this happen? If I stop and restart the engine, it fixes itself. Any ideas you guys can offer would be appreciated.

Re: A couple questions: Fuel and Oil Pressure

Hello,
I am new here. And I am NO mechanic. But I had the same problem on my Jimmy. (Mine was self inflicted...Broke one of the lines while replacing the fuel pump in the tank.)

A friend of mine just told me to replace the metal tubing with rubber gas line. Couple of bucks in hose and hose clamps and I was good to go.

Hope this helps...Good luck

Bill

Yea, rubber fuel line should fix it with proper small clamps.

Where is the oil pressure dropping to? 1/4?

No, it will drop all the way to almost nothing. I have a digital display and it will drop to the last bar, but, like I said before, it will go back to normal whenever I turn the car off and then back on. So, I don't think it is the actual pressure. Also, the pressure will surge when idling at times. Could they be related?

Re: A couple questions: Fuel and Oil Pressure

Bad oil pressure sender or you oil filter is plugged and it is going into bypass.

How many miles on the oil change?

Are you hearing any clatter when this occurs from the valves?

Re: A couple questions: Fuel and Oil Pressure

It has been around 3,500. I haven't been that on top of the oil changes since I have to add oil to it occasionally. I hadn't thought of the oil filter. What is an oil pressure sender, do you mean the pressure sensor? I have been wondering if that was it.

pressure sender is the unit that sends the signal to the dash, it often will go bad.

gas lines

If you are asking about your 91 Jimmy, it should have the low pressure TBI gas system. You can use rubber gas lines with this. You should be able to get metal lines from the stealer or Napa or get a hend bender and make your own. You will need a flaring tool too? I had to replace the whole system on my 94 because it was all rusted together.

I think you might need a special large deep socket to remove the oil pressure sender. Is it still beside the distributor cap? I borrowed a wrench from Napa, used it then took it back to them.

Re: A couple questions: Fuel and Oil Pressure

that was pretty nice of them to let you borrow it, i usually go to advance auto. i will look up in my haynes manual and see where the sender is and if i need a special socket. if it is anywhere near as difficult as changing the spark plugs, then i will definitely need a special tool.

Re: A couple questions: Fuel and Oil Pressure

On the older 4.3, it was beside the distributor in the rear of the engine. THe socket was 1 3/8"? and fit completely over the sending unit. Also, try jacking up the front of the car then reaching the spark plugs thru the wheel wells.

Yea, wheels wels are great for plugs, all except the fron two which you can reach from the front of the truck.
