Microphone?

On the '05 Yukon overhead console that holds the map lights, homelink and rear seat heat controls, there is a small black "button" clipped to the side that I thought was the Onstar microphone. Just over the drivers head, in the headliner, there is what looks like another microphone. Can anyone enlighten me on which one is a microphone and what is the other?

I *believe* that the one above the drivers head is a fan used for climate control while the black thing clipped to the overhead console is the microphone for onstar.

The one over the drivers head is color co-ordinated and only about an inch and a half in diameter with small holes similar to a microphone. The A/C heat outlets are slightly aft and to the left of it. It actually looks more like a microphone than the mickey mouse looking black button. The only reason I'm even curious is that there is a problem with the rear seat heat controls and I was wondering if the black button has anything to do with it.

They have no control over fan speed and putting it in "AUX" does nothing to transfer control to the rear panel. Pushing the "on" button in the rear will get you a "OFF" display whether the front knob is in "AUX" or any other position. The right hand knob does transfer air to the proper vents like it is supposed to do. It has an appointment with the dealer on Monday. When I took it in to make the appointment and a couple of the service people played with it, I didn't like the way they shook their heads.

Re: Microphone?

Probably because they weren't looking forward to some more customer dissatisfaction? So much for "professional grade" engineering...

Does your truck have the rear-audio controls too?

I think they work. The knobs are volume control for plug in type headsets, right? Do the cordless headsets only work for the DVD? Does it play CD's? I tried one with no luck but I was too pushed for time to read up on it. The panel seems to display the right stuff so I think that part is just operator problem. The heating/cooling controls are a definite problem.

Yep the knobs are for wired headphones, the cordless headsets work only with the RSE (i.e., only for listening to DVD movies--you will not be able to listen to any of the other audio sources--radio, front CD changer, XM--with the wireless headsets), and the RSE will (is supposed to be able to) play CDs (but not MP3 CDs).

Interesting thread....

Can somebody please confirm that the well camofaged, 1" Diameter, colour co-ordintaed gizmo above the drives head is for the climate control and not a microphone......

My Car does not have OnStar (I am in Oman), It does have the gizmo though, there are 4 wires attached to the back of it...I would expect only two for a mic....

and it is a bit far back......

Cheers, CN

Yes it's for the climate control--pop it out and you should see a small fan, IIRC...
