spark plugs

hello, i know this might sounds rediculous to some, but i'm not the most car intelligent person in the world. Okay, i have a 1997 bmw 328i, i need to change the spark plugs but i'm in an area that doesnt have a bmw dealer and the only car mechanic that knows anything about bmw's wants to charge me 200 just to change them. screw that!

can anyone please tell me how to change them on my car?? and someone told me they were located on the bottom of the car, is that true?

For 20.00 bucks,get a manual for your car. Haynes or Chilton make them. gives a lot of insight to lots of minor problems. Good read if you really like the car you drive..and in some cases,you will know when the mechanic is ( full of it). Can't hurt. Later...mark

I have the Haynes, Chilton and Bently repair manuals for my 96 328. I found that the Bently is the most comprehensive. But to answer your question;
1) Remove the engine cover (2 pop out nut covers, then remove the nuts.
2) From front to rear (one at a time) unbolt the ignition coil packs.
3) Reach into the cylinder with an socket extension and remove the plug.
4) Reverse the process for installation.
5) Repeat for the remaining 5 cylinders
This is a very easy maintenance procedure, and you should not be intimidated. Fortunately the e36 is very easy to work on.
