Fuel is coming out of your vent tube. That means your float level is set too high.
What kind of carb is it??? Holley,Edelbrock, quadrajunk

Re: gas coming out of carburetor
your float is set too high, your needle valve is bad, or you are running with too much fuel pressure.

id have to agree with these guys, probly a bad gasket, too high float setting, or something along those lines.

Try adjusting the float level first. After rebuilding a carburetor, it's a part of initial tuning anyway and just might be the problem. First, the car must be as level as possible. Remove the air breather/filter and look for the "sight hole". The sight hole is actually just a round, flat screw/plug on the passenger side of the float bowl. With the engine off remove the sight plug. Rags placed around the carb absorb fuel running out. With the sight plug removed, loosen the screw at the TOP of the float bowl with a large flat tip screwdriver. Just enough to be able to turn the 5/8 hex nut. Hold the screw in place when adjusting the hex nut. Turn the nut clockwise to lower the float level (which is what you want). Counter-clockwise raises the float level. This adjust the float valve assembly up and down in the float bowl. You want to lower the float enough so that the fuel level is just at the bottom opening of the sight plug opening, not flowing out on it's own. It should be able to run out of the hole if the car is rocked back and forth. If it does not, the float needs to be raised. After adjusting the primary float to what you believe is correct, repeat the procedure with the secondary float as well. Remove any gasoline soaked rags, replace them with fresh ones and start the motor. You can leave the sight plugs off while the engine is running as long as fuel is not still pouring out to fine tune the float level. With the engine idling and the float levels set, hold the hex nut in place and tighten the screw at the top. If gas still pours out or drips from the booster venturis at idle, you might have to replace the needle and seat assemblies. The screw and hex nut are attatched to the needle. Completely remove the screw at the top and pull the hex nut upward. You will pull the needle assembly out with it. The needles are available at part stores and are fairly cheap. I usually replace them automatically when rebuilding a carburetor. Don't forget to buy new gaskets for the hex nut. They are easily worn or destroyed when adjusting the float level.
Also turn the idle screw clockwise until you feel it begin to stop. Not too hard. Then turn it counter-clockwise 1 1/2 turns. This is a good basis to start from. Good luck and keep us posted. |
