Dual Climate control issue

I have a 99 Intrigue with dual climate control. Ok, it has an AUTO button and a MODE button. If you press the MODE button it will cycle into different blowing combos, (floor, vents, defrost,etc) if I press the AUTO button it will never go into auto climate mode. Only way to do it is click the OFF button and then turn the driver dial then it will say "auto" mode. To me the AUTO button isn't doing anything. Anyone else experience this or how to fix it ?? The climate control works fine just that the button won't switch it from manual to auto with that auto button.
