amp light

Hey today i started up my car and started driving and the amp light lit up
last time that happened my alternator went bad and it killed about 6 batteries before i got around to replacing it but that was over the summer so i dont think the alternator could have gone again
do you guys have any idea what it could possibly be this time?

Re: amp light

this was happening frequently on my 1992 olds 88 which ultimately led to the car dying and no start conditions.. I replaced alternator, starter, and found the result to be corrosion in and around the two +pos battery cables. good place to start - good luck - jhmcar

Re: amp light

Wow - I thought I was the only one with these wierd things.. I also noticed that my driver window only would not work when the amp light flashed in the past.
Ever since I cleaned my +ppos cale last week; my car has been running great. Although my ABS break light is now continously on again. About two years ago it came on, I just drove the car for several months, and the light went off.

Re: amp light

There have been problems with those cables being corroded internally, just a thought.the driver window motor may be weak and need all the power you can muster before it will run.Good Luck

When the light comes on 9 times out of 10 your alternator is bad. Any major parts store can test it for free. If you don't want to take it out, you can start the car and let it run, then disconnect the battery. If it shuts off then you need a new alternator. Remember when the light comes on it's supposed to tell you that the alternator is no longer running the electronics in the car and you are putting a drain on the battery.
