pig dilemma

the pig lives its life wallowing in mud and filth, completely oblivious to its condition, and yet is absolutely happy, in bliss.
now, is it good to be the pig? in other words, is ignorance bliss?

a more modern example is the matrix film. in other words is it good to be one of those people who are plugged in?

in my opinion, yes. i am a 18 yr freshman in college and as a result a am constantly surrounded by simple teenagers(pigs) and by being around them, they seem happy. i mean, i am certainly not really happy, i am frustrated. so is it good to be ignorant?

but i suppose it doesn't really matter though, because once you become self-actualized(unplugged), you can't really go back.

Re: pig dilemma

i thought the same thing driving past a bunch of grazing cows. i was wondering if they were bored and i said to myself "no, they're too stupid to be bored, it's content just being a cow". then all i could think was "lucky basatard cows"

Re: pig dilemma

It depends on the situation, for the pig, its great for it to be ignorant because it cant really do anything to make its situation any better. However for people, the ones who dont realize whats going on around them will never be the ones who do great things with their lives. They will never impact masses of people. The ignorant people will be the ones who turn out to be accountants and loan advisors who marry straight out of college, have a 2 story house, white picket fence, and 2.5 kids. Now the ones who actually realize what is real and what is not, they are the ones who will make great discoveries, save lives, and make others think. Or they end up in rehab.

So it all depends on what you want out of life, if you want to be a normal person then yes its great, but if you want to do something great with your life then no its not.

it doesn't really have anything to do with pigs, or the animals themselves. think of the matrix example, is it better to be just one of those people who are plugged in and or is it better to be one of those who are unplugged?

its only good to be the pig if you think you know everything but actually don't.

an ignorant person is going to constantly find problems with themselfs and knowing they are ignorant will be one of those problems.

bliss to me would be not actually knowing everything ...(if you know everything what is left?)...but believing that you do.

Re: pig dilemma

If the "pig" is fat, dumb and happy until the early slaughter, I'd rather not be the pig.

I'll be happy knowing more and realizing things that would make the "pig" piss his pants.

Everyone's got their personal pig level where they're comfortable. It's like careers; some are happy driving a truck, while others want to be president.

yes, it is frustrating when i know our world could be better than it is. yes, im frustrated knowing that i could be a better person than i am. however, if i was satisfied with the way things are, things would never get better. im quite alright being frustrated with the world, but knowing i am capable of making it a better place, and capable of making myself a better person. to not be capable of self improvment would be the biggest frustration

what does this have to do with anything? are you implying that you feel all alone in your decision to be satisfied with the way things are? or are you calling me a bush supporter (in which case, we'll have words)
