Angry Recalls

This is going to be a long post, sorry bout that, but I'm pissed! Please read on. I appreciate any feedback from you all.

Last week we had 7 recalls to be completed on our 2002 Envoy SLT. My wife was on vacation over the holidays, so it was the perfect time to drop it off at the dealership. Here is what we had done.

1. Shift lock overide campaign
2. I/P cluster gauges inoperative campaign
3. Child restraint anchorage info campaign
4. Wiper motor failure campaign
5. Front seat belt retractor compliance campaign
6. Air suspension/power train control module campaign
7. Tail lamp durability campaign

Surprise, the dealer completed all this work in one day.....no charge to us.

Before having this completed we had problems with the wipers jerking and stopping, the gauges quit working for my wife a couple of times, she couldn't make the shifter work a couple of times..it would lock, and the passenger seat belt acts up and pins the passenger in the seat, requiring you to unlock the belt to be able to move again.

Basically the only parts they put on the vehicle was a plug for the shifter, a seal kit for the wiper motor, a wire harness for the air suspension, and replaced both tail light bulbs and circuit boards.

To make a long story short, the wipers still acted up and now the windshield washers quit working. The work was completed on Thursday. The following Sunday, my wife returned from shopping with the rear bumper dragging the ground. The rear air bags were empty, the system quit working.

I dropped the vehicle back off at the dealer Sunday night with a bitch list complaining about the failures and the fact that they had just completed the above recall work the previous week. I thought maybe the problems were related to what they did. Guess what?? According to them, it has nothing to do with what they did and I get stuck paying for the whole damn thing. If I want it fixed I have to pay.

The wiper problem was the module for the wiper motor.....duh, that's part of the recall. It states that less than 10% of the vehicles inspected would need the module, but if it is necessary, it will be paid for, no cost to me. Remember, when I got it back the first time, the washers didn't work. They did when I took it in for the recall.

The rear suspension problem is a defective air compressor. It runs, but doesn't pump any air. They replaced the harness on the compressor. Did they also screw it up in the process??

Anyway, I picked up our Envoy tonight, after paying a bill totalling $1100.00 plus! I don't see any way they can deny the wiper problem, based on what the campaign states. The cost for that part was $210.00. What they don't know is that I have access to G.M.'s web tools the same as they have, and I've got copies of all that info. Doesn't it seem a little strange that the compressor fails 3 days after the muck with it?? That was the high dollar item. Over $840.00. Ouch.

What I'm curious about is if anyone else has had the compressor fail on their Envoys. I'd appreciate any input.

I would have to agree that maybe they should have taken care of the wiper problem since it was under a recall.
I would suggest that you contact GM customer service and see if you can get some assistance from them.
As far as the air suspension, I have to say this was just a coincidence that this occured.

Just for my own info, how do you get hold of GM web tools?

Actually my air compressor failed at around 20,000 miles. It was replaced under warranty. My recall was done on my wipers- never had a jerky movement before. But all of a sudden, a couple months after the recall they are starting to be real "choppy" and cut out while in mid-wipe. Not even going to the dealer, Ill fix the $*@! thing myself!

Re: Recalls

my advise to anyone takeing anything in for a recall is a trick my dad used to do, (we were both long time GM employes, dad 30 years, myself 15) anytime you bring something in for a recall find out as much about the recall as you can before you bring it in, then if you can find the item to be replaced and mark it in some way (as inconspicuaslly as possible, so you can tell if the part is actually replaced) this can be done with anything that will not wipe off easly, i use a welders scribe, you can pick this up at most auto supply shops for around $5.oo that way if they dont replace the part and say they did you have some proof.
therre are a lot of bad dealers that just say they do things and charge gm for it then next time you come in to get it fixed they get to nail you for a high dollar repair. good luck
buy the way my dad used to make his tires on his IROC like the cops do chaulk line from tire to pavement every time he brought it in for an oil change 2 dealers never moved the car and charged him for the change.
