rough starts with my 96 grand am gt

I drive a 96 Grand Am GT and for awhile now, it starts roughly. If I let it idle for about 3min, the rpm gauge starts flying up to 2000rpms and the engines revving up and down. I tried replacing the idle air control valve and doing that did reduce the frequent occurence of the problem but it will still do this but now will only jump up to 1000rpms and back down and up etc...

Also, immediately following this I will put the car in reverse and it will stutter hard as it goes then when I put it in drive it will stutter harder and stall if I do not punch the accelerator.

I've tried cleaners, replacing the oxygen sensor, and replacing the idle air control valve but this problem still persists...I've put somewhat of a dent into the problem but it's not gone completely.

Also since all of this my MPG has suffered, my car is eating gas and it has lost a lot of performance. It seems like more than the needed amount of gas is being used to power, so to speak, my car.

Can anyone give me any insight as to just what is going on? I am not very proficient with cars...

Thanks
Jarod

i know your problem.
What you do is take out the idle air control valve in your throttle body and clean out where it goes in. I mean into your throttle body. it will be full of black crap. the best way is to remove the throttle body but takes about an hour. This will fix the problem. 100% i have done it several of times to grand ams. always fixes it. when you start up from cold the rpm gos up and down then whenn you hit the gas a little it revs up to 2000 stays there for a couple of seconds then falls back down and continues to idle rough.. if that is your problem that is the solution

Ah, so all I have to do is take out the throttle body and clean the black junk out of it? OR remove the IAC Valve and clean where it sits in the throttle body? Also...wet rag? butter knife or scraper? something like that....is there a solvent you'd recommend?

Thanks for replying btw.

remove the iac valve and clean where it sits in the throttle body. use q-tips and degreaser..it will take about 200 q-tips..you don't have to remove the enire throttle body ..but to do a perfect job you should...just because the hole will be facing away from you...
