Engine Replacement
I have a 87 Camry Wagon 4 cylinder automatic. The engine is knocking really bad like metal to metal knocking. Anyway, I took the valve cover off and looked inside. There are pieces of metal up near the valves. Like chips of metal. I think they are from the edges of the valves but don't really know. Anyway I am pretty sure I want to replace the whole engine, because that seams like the easiest way to go. Where can I find engines for cheap used or new. I really only want the engine. But any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would also like to know some stats on the engine like hp output and engine code. I think it is a 2.0 litre and it puts out like 100 hp. Thanks.

Re: Engine Replacement
Hey mate!
There are two alternatives here. 1) Engine replacment - will cost a bit but not too much - worth it if yuor planning to upgrade to a better engine!! replacing an engine also has its' risks - get the engine checked many times to see if IT DOES need replacing. it all depends on the engine state and cost 2) Engine recondition - a better alternative IF the engine can be recodnitoned - again it depends on cost and what u want. You can replace your engine with reconditioned engines - check your local directory for Engine reconditoning businesses. - If they have good engines lying around such as celica or performance corolla engines - check the cost and if its worthwhile - then do it - those engines are better in performace and economy than a standard 2 litre camry. But get all details of the engines first - make sure of the mileage and use of thise engines - Details on your camry (i know - I have a 1990 Camry Ultima - in the US it would be a high luxury model) Officail reports give it 88kw at 5200rpm - thats like 118hp most likely though, since its built on the similar platform to the Celica of the time, the power level would be around 90-95 kw - 120hp at 5200rpm. Little hint - Camry and Celica are similar in design and production - beside the obvious differences - the performace of the Camry and Celica are not too far apart Dont pay attention to reviews and crap - they test the camry at peak levels of driving - eg. hitting it to the red line where perofrmance sucks Camry's and other cars similar to that are NOT tuned to perform at 6000rpm - Celicas on the other hand are since they sports cars - BUT Camry's go hard between 1000rpm and 4000rpm - since the Camry was a family car built to operate at normal street driving conditions - therefore peformance on an unmodified Camry would be best between 1000rpm to 4000rpm - put a Celica and Camry together - the celica at the red line and the Camry at 4000rpm - the results would nearly be equal - the only thing would be maximum Hp on the Celica would be advatagous. HINT: get up and go - If your camry has an overdrive switch on the shifter - turn it off when travelling at speeds under 60km/h or 30-40miles - when it goes above - then turn it on - You get much better performace manipulating the overdrive - and try to use the gas pedal to frce earlier shifts on an automatic - just go hard and ease off the gas when u know its time to shift up rather than letting the rpm go up and shift automatically - between 2500 and 4000rpm - you get smoother shifts and better performance. Use premium gas - it does wonders on Toyota engines - no prbs - replace the cap, rotor and spark plugs first - cheap and effective. the focus on air, intake and other mods. im kinda upgrading/restoring my Camry. Im doing most of the interior and exterior work - and some minor engine and electrical - if its too difficult - let and expert handle it. But it cost around 600-800 bucks for a complete exterior touch up, paint, badeg removal, rust, chrome removal/replacment, bumber refitting etc. You can do most of this urself no prbs ! You can fit ur own air filter (advisable to only replace the one u have with a performance one - pods are risky since the design of engine will lead to the pods heating, as well as its close proxmity to the battery, and the usual dirt and crap which can get on it. Need anymore tips mate? Look aorund in Forums - you can find anything u need to know |
