Forget Cobra - Bring Back "The Boss"

Why bother screwing around with Carroll Shelby? Make the '09 Mustang 24" LONGER, make it 9" WIDER and dust off the blueprints for the scariest and HAIRIEST Mustang EVER made... the Boss 429 Big Block...

For those lucky to own one, there was "The Ultimate Boss," the rare Can Am 494, an exotic bored-out version of the Boss 429 NASCAR engine. Using standard Hilborn injection only thirteen (13) full aluminium engines were made and five (5) of the ULTRA-rare magnesium engines. A reputed *700HP+* was obtainable from this setup.

700HP+... from the factory...

STOCK.

In 1969.

Go ahead Ford, make my day... build the 21st Century functional equivalent of this Corvette Killer.

Be still my heart. I'd probably sell my house to buy one, if I had to.

Bosses are....well, the BOSS!(but I still have love for Shelby and the Cobra though)So why isn't there room for both of these bad-ass cars?

Why not? I love all of the 65-70 Shelby Cobra Mustangs. What's NOT to love? All in all, I truly believe that Ford has one, and only one, more shot at building a real ass-kicking big block Mustang. If we ran out of gas today, I would still buy one and wait for the day a proper synthesised fuel was developed for my Sunday cruises.

Still, with each passing day, new electric cars, questionable oil reserves and most especially, old farts like me with the money and a real-time memory of the muscle car era, Ford will miss its very last chance to tap this market. We just may not live long enough to buy one.

Oh the humanity!

I say Ford builds the 1994 SVT Boss Mustang.

10.0L V8
855 HP @ 6200 RPM
790 TQ @ 5200 RPM
3-Speed Automatic
RWD
Acceleration 0-60 mph: 1.9 sec
¼ Mile: 10.55 sec @ 135 mph

That, right there ladies and gentlemen is a true BOSS Mustang.

Re: Forget Cobra - Bring Back "The Boss"

I've sat in it..(really, no BS)

Anyway, I like the direction they took with the Cobra/Mach 1. Having both trim levels. Gives you an all-around handler/accelerator, and kind of a "drag-pack" car. The SVT Cobra has built its own heritage now and needs to be continued on, regardless of other models offered.

Re: Forget Cobra - Bring Back "The Boss"

If they do make new Boss mustangs, I'd guess they'd make a bunch of Boss 302 mustangs(stroked out 4.6), and a few hundred Boss 351 stangs. Like Mach 1/Bullitt numbers for the Boss 302(6,000-10,000), 2000 Cobra R numbers for the 351(300-500). 351 would be a stroked 5.4 I'd guess. That'd be sweet. I doubt they'd go much bigger than 351ci in a production mustang though.
Boss 351 was the fastest of the three anyways!(besides the ultra rare Can-am 494, which wasn't publicly available anyways)

Dear All... Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just an old guy with white hair, bad knees and a few very fond Mustang memories. Ford built Mustangs between 1964 1/2 and 1970 and then STOPPED making them. The last *TRUE* BOSS was built in 1970 too.

Hold on now ... please hear me out!... Sure, Ford built cars and called them "Mustangs," but for old farts like me, they didn't even come CLOSE to building another real Mustang until 2005, complete with most of the original design cues that made those early 'stangs soooooo sweet!

(sighs) A CanAm-class super Mustang would be a real hoot, wouldn't it? If SVT can do to the '05 what they did to the '94, I only have TWO questions - WHERE can I buy one and WHEN can I get it?

Actually, I have a THIRD question - How long will it take Carroll Shelby to draw from the design cues of his GT-350's and 500's to recreate some kind of 428SCJ. I always thought the Cobra Mustangs were better looking than the BOSSes... how sweeeet would that be?

Re: Forget Cobra - Bring Back "The Boss"

Correction - the last Boss mustang was made in '71, the only year of the Boss 351... Unless you left that out intentionally meaning you don't like the '71-'73 mustangs. They certainly don't have quite the spirit of the '64.5-'70s, but they were the quickest Bosses of them all, so they get respect from me.

Of course I left it out... I have owned 3 fastbacks... a '65 (289cid), '68 (390cid) and '71 (302cid) along with 2 convertibles... a 64 1/2 (260cid) and a '66 (289cid). I personally did frame-up resto's on each one, including engines and drivelines (except the '71 - it was the one and only Mustang I ever crashed and totalled).

As you know, 1971 marked the first year of Ford's MAJOR departure from its original design and, for me, marked the beginning of the end for Mustang's appeal (even though I bought a '71). The break between '66 and '67 wasn't as big a deal for me. The break from '70 and '71 was a heartbreaker.

And it got worse when the '74 Mustang II rolled out... I damned near had a heart attack and died

That's why I am SO happy that Ford, even though they are 30 years LATE (for me, at least), have returned to the truest roots and my fondest memories of the Mustang.

BTW, I had an opportunity to buy a '69 or '70 BOSS 429 (I can't remember which year and I DON'T WANT to) back in 1973 off a dealer's lot for $14,500 - I passed on it because this country was in the grips of the '73 Arab Oil Embargo. Gas was "up" to $.60 a gallon and with rationing, no one could buy more than $2.00 at a time. I bought the small block '71 fastback instead... dammit!

Talk about and

Re: Forget Cobra - Bring Back "The Boss"

sorry to hear that... yeah the 351 was pretty fast but if you knew how to tune the 429 right it was definatly the most powerful, thats what they used in nascar

I hear about people wanting Ford and Shelby to bring back the GT-500 with the 428. I'm sorry, but it won't be a GT-500 until it has a 427 under the hood.

If Ford is going to bring back some kind of super-stang they better do it soon. Chevy's 2006 ZO6 Corvette matches the GT-40 with only half the price.

LS7 Corvette
427 cubic inches
Price: $75,000
500hp
475lb-ft
0-60: 3.8 sec
0-100: 7.7 sec
1/4 mile: 11.7 sec@127 mph
EPA City: 16mpg
EPA Highway: 22mpg
Total weight: 3130

I'd love for Ford to bring back the GT-500 to compete with the Corvette again. It'd be just awesome to have 427 Ford vs. 427 Chevy.

There are only a handful of GT-500s with 427s, probably only 1 prototype. AKA the Shelby GT-500 "Super Snake", with a 520hp 427 side oiler.
There were 2050 428 powered GT500s in '67, 1251 in '68, 1871 in '69, and a few hundred in '70. Total is around 5500, versus 1 to 12 427 powered...

Actually there were several 427 GT-500s built. They were only made in two years though, 1967 and 1968. These were not the "Super Snake" that you talk about though. They were rated at 425 horsepower and 476 horsepower. If I had to guess I'd say, at most, 800 were built in 1967. Ford took over Shelby in 68 so the number either dropped or went up so I don't know.
