Transmission Synchro Replacement?

So im at the toyota dealership, looking at the parts blow up and part numbers for new synchros. And from reading these boards it would seem that the synchros kinda blow up in 91 trannies. So the question is? Can the better 93+ synchros' be installed in the 91 trannies without having to do a bunch of modification, or is it a direct parts swap. Or should i go about just finding me a whole 93+ transmission?

91 Turbo- 2nd Blown Transmission!

Re: Transmission Synchro Replacement?

I think you can get a new 93 LSD tranny for $1400 or so ... by the time you get all the gears and syncros you would need for a 91 it may not be as cost affective as buying a hole tranny.

If you get the LSD version, you will need new inner axle stubbs though.

um......what i meant i guess is? Can i get 93+ Synchros, and place them into the 91 Tranny without having to change out the Gear Set? i have 2 91 Trannies, Both have 3rd gear synchro bad, and 1 has a destoryed shift fork from forcing the shift through the grind. And I already priced the tranny from Toyota? its going for $1800 for me at 20% above Dealer Cost. Dealers Cost is $1500. I get a decent hook up at my dealership.

Re: Transmission Synchro Replacement?

Why pay $1800 for a 91 when you can get a 93 LSD for $1400?

As for your specifc question on the syncros, I have no clue ~ sorry.

I agree, But then again i guess i didn't type that good either 93+ tranny costs $1800. didn't even price out a 91-92 tranny. still want to know if you can put the 93+ synchro's in a 91 tranny though ( as In do a 91 Tranny rebuild but use 93+ synchros instead of 91 Synchros without changing everything else in the transmisson)

Re: Transmission Synchro Replacement?

You can buy 93 LSD for less than $1500 new.
The 91 non-LSD trannies are actually more $$

Believe it or not.

Call "Craig B" at Thompson Toyota (outside of Philadelphia, PA). Tell him I sent you and see what he quotes you

Ok, your guy quoted me $1700 + 100 shipping, so the same price i can get down here, but thanks for the referral. Anyone else out there reading this want to sell a 93+ tranny post here though i dont expect to be holding my breath on that? So i guess i might just try putting new synchros from the 93+ trannies im my old one and hope it all fits together right. Stupid trannies, achilles heel of a nearly impervious car.
