Question 98 Bonne - Security Light On - Car Won't Start

I went out to move my 98 Bonne out of the garage last night. Stuck the key in the ignition and tried to start it as normal and it was dead...nothing. Then I noticed the Security Light was on...what does this mean? I knew the battery wasn't dead because I had light and everything, so I grabbed my trusty owner's manual and thumbed through it...of course I found nothing about this feature, well anything in depth anyway. So I got on the web...

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?
Did it keep doing it or get worse?
How do you fix this problem?

I don't know where to even start mainly because I do not know what is causing it?

Re: 98 Bonne - Security Light On - Car Won't Start

Turn the key to the on position crawl underneath with a large screwdriver. Use the screwdriver to short acrossed the starter solenoid making sure to contact the small connection as well. I will probably start & run about 2-3 seconds and quit again.

I just had a similar situation in my 1995 Pontiac Bonneville. It was the starter switch in the steering column. There are two fine wires attached to the switch which are part of the security device, eventually they wear out and break. You have to purchase a new switch and key. Total for parts is about $90. Labor ?

Re: 98 Bonne - Security Light On - Car Won't Start

it called the ignition lock cylinder, they run about 35-45 dollars but when you get the part you have to take the blank key that comes with it to a GM dealer with the VIN to your car so you can get the right chip code and tell them to make you another key with the chip code you have and with the blank that you got with the part. So the whole job will probably end up costing you about $70 if you do it yourself.

Why couldn't you take the switch out, re splice the wires and resolder them to the cylinder? Would this work? Sounds cheaper to me...

hmmm.... that might work... Ive never tried it or even thought of it. Depending on what everyone else says I say go for it, and see if it works. Its worth a shot all it takes is time!

Re: 98 Bonne - Security Light On - Car Won't Start

Splicing the wires did not work on my 95 Bonneville. According to the guys at the dealership the ignition switch has to exhibit a certain resistance for the vehicle to start. Adding an additional connection adds resistance. I had to get the new switch and the new key. Good Luck.
NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE YOU START TAKING APART THE STEERING WHEEL. THE AIR BAG COULD GO OFF.

Re: 98 Bonne - Security Light On - Car Won't Start

ahh ok, that makes sence, yea definitly remove the two fuses for the bags, as well as the battery connection AND the air bag connectors,
Take Battery Terminal off first
Remove Fuses
Remove the two (L&R) Air bag connectors
Just in case you didnt know, just removing the battery connections doesnt mean that it will remove the power for the air bags, it will still hold power for a certain amount of time
