1997 Transport Receiver replaced but Fobs won't work

I have a 1997 Transport and the power locks wouldn't work. The dealership diagnosed the problem as the receiver and recommended a replacement. $300+ Yikes! and now that the receiver is replaced they are telling me that the transmitters won't work now at all and suggest they be replaced at another $300 or so! Any suggestions!?

One more thing. I was reading other people's posts and realize that there may be some quirks with reprogramming the transmitters on key fobs. I wonder if they misdiagnosed the problem and that the real problem was that the fobs needed proper reprogramming?
