Talking 96 Jetta Trek-CEL,Vacuum Prob??

Hello All! I'm new to this Forum stuff, so please excuse some of the stupid questions I'm about to ask. I've got a 1996 Jetta Trek with a 5 spd. and about 82000 mi. I just replaced the 1.8 bar Oil pressure switch last night (I hope this will stop the oil light and buzzer from intermitenly coming on)I tried to clean the area today of all the oil that had previously leaked, so I could keep an eye out for any other leaks. Got it cleaned, but at a cost. Now my Check Engine Light came on er 1 block and the car began to sputter every time I gave it a little to much pedal. The sputtering has pretty much gone away but the light remains. I checked the engine to see if I blew off any wires, lines, etc. And I noticed the Fuel pressure regulator vacuum line was cracked. I fixed the line, but CEL is as bright as ever. HELP!!! Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Re: 96 Jetta Trek-CEL,Vacuum Prob??

More than likely the water showed a fault with the ignition coil, they commonly crack & the water will let the spark arc to ground. That probably set a misfire code, which will have to be read & cleared with a scanner. Autozone & Advanced Auto Parts can read & clear them for free.

Thank you Boschmann!!!! It took a couple of days to find a store that would let me use there scanner without a fat deposit. $183 Autozone in SoCal. 3 codes that came up, 2 were the same P0304 Misfire, and 1 PO300 misfire of the #4 cylinder. We cleared the codes and no more light. Manager said that if it doesn't come back on within a couple of days, all should be fine. Thanks again!!!!

You might want to check the plugs, wires, cap & rotor (and coil). If it sputters again it will probably reset the code.
