Start on sec crank
Got 1990 Lumina Euro 3.1l. Everytime I try to start it won't on first try. It does crank and all and seems as if it started but soon as I release the key from start position car dies. Will start for sure on second try. The weird part is if I just ignition the key and let it sit for 4 or 5 seconds the car will start on first attempt. Any ideas?

Re: Start on sec crank
I would suspect the fuel pump. When the key is turned on, the fuel pump engages and primes the engine for compression.

Re: Start on sec crank
I'm not real familiar with the 3.1 but on other vehicles, I seen where something is allowing fuel pressure to bleed down after the car is turned off (leaking injectors?) Then when you get in the vehicle and immediately crank it, it wont start but if you give it a second to re-establish pressure your good to go.

Re: Start on sec crank
turn your key on wait a few seconds then try it. If it starts check your fuel pump and injection system for bleed down

Re: Start on sec crank
Thanks guys. Hey logankelly that is how the car works. How can I check for this bleed down? I noticed the other day that the fuel pump and injectors are staying on after I shut the car off and the only way to shut them off is to remove the fuse for the fuel pump. For sure the injectors are staying on, I can here them humming under the hood. This also caused the battery to go dead, so I've removed the fuse every time now. Aslo the car is getting very poor gas mileage. Could this be related to the injestors?

Re: Start on sec crank
your fuel pump should shut off when you turnkey off you have a short somwhere. Go talk to a gm tech their advice is free, you do have electrical problems. before you start replacing stuff spend the 70.00hr at gm dealer and find they find problem right away
