'88: What do you think about this price???

I have found a 1988 4Runner SR5. V6/Auto with every available option. 200,000 miles. No rust. One owner, meticulous. Grey in color. They are asking $2600. Is this reasonable? What should I expect in terms of the condition or what should have been serviced or replaced? Is the V6 or the 4-cylinder better in the long haul? Thanks for your input

i looked it up on kbb and the private party value is about $2,900, and that's if its in excellent condition.....$2,650 in good condition. as far as services, most toyotas recommend that things like the transmission, differentials and transfer case be done about every 15,000 miles and of course radiatior every 30,000. i've also heard that the timing belt needs replacement about every 60,000 miles. if he kept real good care of it, he should have a service log.

Find out if the head gascet has been replaced, and if yes find out where they did it.

The 3.0L V6 seems to have a problem with that but once it is replaced it is a great engine.

Re: '88: What do you think about this price???

There is a headgasget free replacement campain/recall on 3.0L V6's made til '95 year model unless it has already been done.

The 3.0L is a flat out gas guzzling under powered (by poor intake and exhuast engineering) sad excuse for a V6 and was an embaressment to Toyota in the face of Nissans V6 3.0L(I have both in a 94'and 92 version)...on the flip side 4runners have a much tighter, smoother ride..and man you can't beat the cargo room lol...anyways test drive a good running 4.0L and even better yet a peppy 3.4L and you will know what I say is true(don't forget to ask people who own a 3.0L,4.0L verses 3.4L V6 owners what their MPG's are)

P.S. Your 4runner in question with 3.0L V6 will get 12-16 MPG max in good running condition

Re: '88: What do you think about this price???

I was working on an afro-american engineered bendix super charger set up with full adj. wastegate plumbed in main air intake and popping front and back welch plugs off intake and routing into them on an older one a friend had with open headers(don't try this at home lol)....worked good after alot of compensations in the way the different sensors reading what was going on with a few given false and altered input ..til...well...errrr....ok yeah we got greedy and went for it after taking it easy on it awhile getting bugs worked out(boy was that a fun short very intering ride lol)

In short the whole intake design on a 3.0L is wacked and screws you on any kind of performance and would have to be completely built from scratch and battery and airflow meter would have to switch sides...not worth the money time and effort when you can just sell it and buy the 3.4L that they redesigned the intake on(exhaust flows better too) and why they get better performance and gas milage....ask AlienEvolution lol
