Re: 97 Grand AM SE has me baffaled
More than likely your alternator is dead and in the process the battery is now providing all the power for the engine electrical and accessories needs. The battery is completely depleted and can just provide the idiot lights to come on but not enough to provide power to the starter to turn over the engine.
Have the battery checked which is probably depleted and needs charging which takes about 3-4 hours for portable 120v battery charger to fully charge the battery. OR If you have a spare fully charged battery then you can swap out the depleted battery from your vehicle and that should allow you start your vehicle and will provide power to the engine electrical needs. At this time the alternator is probably not supplying electricity because it is dead. If you drive with the new fully charge battery just to let you drive home, make sure you don't use any accessories or head lights. Make sure you do it during day time so that the battery won't get depleted by using electrical accessories. OR Remove the alternator and have it tested at Autozone and if confirmed dead then replace it. If I were you, my first step to diagnose this problem is with a fully charged battery to see if the engine turns over and stay running. Once safely at home, remove the alternator and have it tested. |
